I assume we're talking about the teeth in her mouth and not in her comb or the zipper of her pants or something equally lateral...

If my assumption is correct, did the worsening of her teeth take the form of discoloration? weakening? cavities? Was this a gradual or sudden process? Did this occur naturally or due to some external stimuli?

So it's not to do with the direction of brushing...

The angle of bristles in relation to the gumline?
Starting in the same place each time?
Skipping inner tooth surfaces?
Rinsing (or other follow-up) relevant?
Drying or changing the toothbrush relevant?

so to protect her mental health she brushed her teeth in such a way that they were not protected from decay?
did she brush them with sugar? or add sugar to the toothpaste? is sugar relevant at all? anything else she eats relevant? candy?

is it relevant whether she was trying to treat a mnetal health problem or trying to prevent one occurring? if so - was she trying to treat? preventing?

was she trying to prevent anxiety? depression? OCD? unhappiness? was she trying to prevent being treated badly by another person? was she trying to stop something bad happening? to make something good happen? to get attention? to avoid attention? to affect the behaviour of another person?

was she deliberately seeking to cause decay in her teeth? was she trying to cause toothache? trying to make her breath smell bad?

Must not resort to google, must not resort to google...

So, in order to stave off alzheimer's disease, our heroine followed (presumably doctor-directed) instructions to brush her teeth differently. She changed an aspect of her brushing, but not the materials. The aspect involved a change in technique, but not the direction or explicitly the duration of brushing, the angle of the bristles, the starting position, skipping surfaces or any activity following up or preparing for the actual brushing itself?

I remember there being a correlation between gingivitis and the bacteria causing or exacerbating alzheimer's disease. Is this relevant? One would think doing all you could to prevent gingivitis would be beneficial to the health of your teeth, but perhaps she overbrushed? I really don't know.

Balance and co-ordination exercises are often recommended to stave off alzheimer's disease. Did she brush her teeth while standing on one foot, leading to her falling over, hitting her face and damaging her teeth?

Is there some sort of relevant mental activity associated with the brushing (such as counting, picturing something while brushing, mentally following the direction of the brush)

Does the solution have anything to do with the way she uses her hands (changing hands for different sides of the mouth, for example, or changing her grip on the brush)?

Did she use her non-dominant hand to brush her teeth? And therefore didn't do a good enough job due to her lack of co-ordination or pressure?

Alternatively, she only had one arm, or her mother had taken thalidomide while pregnant, and she was unable to brush her teeth with her other hand, having followed the Doctor's advice a little too obediently. So she never brushed, and her teeth suffered.

*********** SPOILER *************
Weird as it may sound, some doctors advise brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand in order to open up new neural pathways (or whatever) in the hope of staving off Alzheimer's disease. But when Venetia followed this advice, she did a lousy job of brushing her teeth. Obvious next step for Venetia: she should brush her teeth twice, once with each hand. Obvious next step for you: check out my new puzzle!!
