Why did a man who spoke only Spanish fly to Brazil and immediately purchase two dozen romance novels in Portugese?

Did he buy the novels for himself? Was he paid to fly to Brasil and buy romance novels? Did he plan to learn Portugese?
Could he have bought two dozen crime novels in Portugese instead? Two dozen newspapers in Portugese?

Was he conducting a study of some discription? or maybe an expirement? Trying to win a bet?

Is he comparing the two languages? Any relevant grammatical standards or spelling in either spanish or portugeuse?

Could he have flown to Portugal and achieved the same goal? Was 2 dozen the minimum amount of novels he required for his purpose or would a dozen novels have been sufficient? Did he buy 2 dozen copies of the same book or were they all different?

Is he trying to set some sort of record?

Did he plan to buy the books before he travelled to Brasil?
...or just couldn't resist a "buy one, get 23 free" offer when he arrived, and figured he'd sell them off to friends for a profit?

Did he plan for the books to be read? By him or someone else?

Did he plan for the books to be used in some other way?
...did he go on holiday to Brasil, find the hotel desk was wobbly and too low for him, and buy a couple of dozen cheap books - a load of naff romance ones - from the hotel pound-shop to prop the legs up?

Did he buy them to stop anyone else being able to buy or sell them?
...was he going on holiday with his wife, and couldn't bear two weeks of her getting emotional over romance novels, so bought every one out of the only local bookshop and burned them before she noticed?

Did he think they spoke Spanish in Brazil? Did he want to look at the cover which was revealing?

Could he have flown to Portugal to buy it? Was the man from South America? Central America? Mexico? Spain?

Was the book not available in Spanish? Did he want people to think he spoke Portugese? Think he read the book?

Redwine:

Did he buy the novels for himself? no Was he paid to fly to Brasil and buy romance novels? no Did he plan to learn Portugese? no/irrelevant
Could he have bought two dozen crime novels in Portugese instead? possibly, although it would likely have cost more for no additional payoff Two dozen newspapers in Portugese? possibly, depending on the newspaper

Peter365:

Was he conducting a study of some discription? no or maybe an expirement? not in a deliberate, pre-meditated sort of way Trying to win a bet? no

Is he comparing the two languages? no Any relevant grammatical standards or spelling in either spanish or portugeuse? no

Could he have flown to Portugal and achieved the same goal? In this scenario, flying to Portugal would be highly counter-productive Was 2 dozen the minimum amount of novels he required for his purpose yes or would a dozen novels have been sufficient? no Did he buy 2 dozen copies of the same book or were they all different? irrelevant

Is he trying to set some sort of record? no

Solo1:

Was the author of the novels relevant? no did he know the author and wanted to help his sales? no was the author himself? (in translation) no - that's another puzzle

Psydkik:

I always read your name as 'Psyduck'. Perhaps I need to use a bigger font.

Did he plan to buy the books before he travelled to Brasil? no
...or just couldn't resist a "buy one, get 23 free" offer when he arrived, and figured he'd sell them off to friends for a profit? Throughout the edgeless course of space and time, this would be the most generous offer ever made by an airport bookshop. No, in this case.

Did he plan for the books to be read? no By him or someone else? n/a

Did he plan for the books to be used in some other way? yes!
...did he go on holiday to Brasil, find the hotel desk was wobbly and too low for him, and buy a couple of dozen cheap books - a load of naff romance ones - from the hotel pound-shop to prop the legs up? This is certainly lateral thinking, and OTRT. However, the purchase occurred before he made it to his hotel room.

Did he buy them to stop anyone else being able to buy or sell them? no
...was he going on holiday with his wife, and couldn't bear two weeks of her getting emotional over romance novels, so bought every one out of the only local bookshop and burned them before she noticed? I always wondered at reviews of books of lateral thinking puzzles claiming the solutions were too far-fetched. I would grant them that point if this were the solution, however. No. This is incorrect.

Gregoryuconn:

Did he think they spoke Spanish in Brazil? No Did he want to look at the cover which was revealing? no

Could he have flown to Portugal to buy it? In this scenario, flying to Portugal would be highly counter-productive Was the man from South America? Yes, a contiguous South American hispanophonic state - irrelevant which Central America? Mexico? Spain?

Was the book not available in Spanish? He could probably have bought it in Spanish in his home country, but not where he made the purchase in this puzzle Did he want people to think he spoke Portugese? no Think he read the book? no

I should remind everyone, given the frequent appearances of 'it' and 'the book', that he bought 24 novels, not just one.

Would flying to Portugal be counter-productive just because Brazil was much closer to the man? Did he go to Brazil for work? Pleasure?

Was it necessary that the books be in Portuguese? If there had been books in the same shop for the same price in Spanish could he have bought them? In any other language? Would the man still have done this if he did speak Portuguese?

Relevant that Brazilian Portuguese is quite different to European Portuguese?

Did he buy romance novels (as opposed to another genre) because they are cheap? Because the place he was buying them from had lots of them?

Did he need to spend a certain amount of money? Did he need the books for their paper? Did he plan to stack them? Make something out of them?

Is a crime involved at all?

Could his purpose be fulfilled using non-romance books of an equal length, size, and price? Is there anything about the literary content of the books that's relevant?

Does he plan to return to his home country? Would this puzzle work equally well if his home country was Austria and he traveled to Italy, with Italian books, etc.? Or is something about Brazil or South America relevant?

Smuggling relevant? Does he plan to pull an "Andy Dufrense," a.k.a. hollow out the books and put something inside?

Would non-romance novels have worked? Is the physical size of the books relevant? Their length?

Did he fly to Brazil? Drive? Take a bus? A train? A ferry? Would this have happened if he took a different means of transportation? Or was this not even feasible?

Did he make the decision to buy the novels before he left home? Before he entered Brazil? Before he arrived at the bookshop? If he didn't drive in himself, before his plane/train/bus left the station/airport? While the plane/train/bus was en route to the destination? After it landed/arrived?

Customs (as in at international borders) relevant?

Wow, I managed both to miss Doriana's question and to phrase mine in almost the exact same way, impressive.

Does everyone on the plane with him use the books? Do they use them before leaving the airport? Does he know the people he flew with? Does anyone else but him buy books?

Were the books used to cover an object? A body part? Part of an object?

Did he know when he boarded the plane that he would buy the books when he landed? Did he come to know this during the flight? After landing?

Was each book used for more than a minute? An hour? A day? A week?

I must say, this is the fastest-paced and most exciting puzzle I've ever hosted

Would non-romance novels have worked? yes, but would likely have been more expensive for no real gain Is the physical size of the books relevant? yes Their length? not really, although a minimum standard would be necessary

Did he fly to Brazil? yes, as per the puzzle statement Drive? Take a bus? A train? A ferry? no to the rest Would this have happened if he took a different means of transportation? it would be less likely Or was this not even feasible? he could have taken another method, with a greater chance of avoiding this puzzle situation - but it would have cost a lot more in time and possibly other expenses

Did he make the decision to buy the novels before he left home? no Before he entered Brazil? no Before he arrived at the bookshop? yes If he didn't drive in himself, before his plane/train/bus left the station/airport? no While the plane/train/bus was en route to the destination? no After it landed/arrived? yes

Customs (as in at international borders) relevant? no

Did they cover their faces with the books? Was there some reason why they wanted to avoid being recognised? Did they hold them over their heads?

Is it relevant how the airline lost his luggage? no If so, did it get sent to another destination by mistake? irrelevant Relevant where? Or was there a physical problem with the plane that destroyed or otherwise ruined the luggage? the scenario could work with destroyed luggage as well as lost luggage. Suffice it to say, he arrived in Brazil and discovered he was lacking the something he needed for his work.

Doriana:

Relevant how many people come to Brazil with him? yes - assuming we're talking about the people relevant to the puzzle and not those incidentally on the same aircraft less than 5? less than 10? more than that? this Are they a sports team? yes!!

All right, we're almost there now.

Shinpads? And Enjay wins the penalty shoot-out!

***** SPOILER ******

The man was the coach of a team playing an exhibition match in Brazil. His flight was delayed and he and the team found themselves with very little time before the match began. Upon arrival, he discovered that some of his team's equipment had been lost in transit, including all the shinpads. He quickly bought the romance novels as a replacement before heading to the game.

I read this once in a book of amazing things that totally really happened, honestly, but 5 minutes of assertive googling haven't shown any trace of the story.

Congratulations to all who took part; that was quite an adrenaline rush for me. The most surprising thing of all was that the slowest part in forthcoming was the solution.

Wow, this thread got a lot of attention in a short time! I come back and it's finished :-o

Did I miss the part where you offered free beer to anyone who took part?!

Oh, and
"I always read your name as 'Psyduck'. Perhaps I need to use a bigger font."

Perhaps you do ;-)
- it's psydkik, phonetic for "side kick", which is why I used it as my username for when my original "psymann" got killed off in the Great Username Cull and I needed to register with a new one. :-D

It was a non-stop thrill-ride. It's a pity you missed out, although it probably would have been a shorter ride with your contribution, given your knack for reading my mind.

Speaking of fine print, the free beer applies to the puzzle host exclusively.

I figured that was the rationale behind your name, but Psyduck is quite the pervasive little mental image. And fitting, seeing as sometimes your questions give me a headache :P.

I think my contribution peaked at my first set of questions - I didn't know where that one was going to end up until it suddenly came out at the end. ;-)

I had to google psyduck to realise it's a 'thing'! One new name to keep in reserve for another time ;-) And also fitting as apparently it uses its powers while in a trance or asleep, and having sat in front of the forum for a while in a trance, I'm off to bed!

*blushes* I have to admit that I read 'Psydkik' as 'Psydik', not noticing that first 'k'.
Well, I thought your 'real' name might be Richard.
Time to see about new glasses!

Great puzzle, BTW!
