Hmmmph! I don't hold with furniture that talks.

Actually, that's not a bad idea.

You don't like furniture that talks, and you're willing to admit it?
Is talking furniture not a bad idea, or you "holding" with it?
Is this an actual piece of furniture? A chair? A bed? A table?
An appliance?
Is it common in a non-speaking form?
Is the talking version at all common?

You don't like furniture that talks, and you're willing to admit it? Actually I'm indifferent - don't care one way or the other - but my 'spokesperson' doesn't like them.
Is talking furniture not a bad idea, Sometimes it's not., or you not "holding" with it? Let's say sometimes have reservations about it.
Is this an actual piece of furniture? A chair? A bed? A table? Could be any of these. An appliance? Unlikely.
Is it common in a non-speaking form? Yes
Is the talking version at all common? No, and AFAIK may be still 'in development.'

Is talking furniture a component of a "smart home," in which items are linked to a central computer?
Is the talking intended to convey helpful information, or to entertain?
Is this actual, audible speaking, or some kind of readout on a screen?
Is your spokesperson relevant? Wife or other domestic partner?

Is talking furniture a component of a "smart home," in which items are linked to a central computer? Yopish; somewhat related.
Is the talking intended to convey helpful information? this
Is this actual, audible speaking, no or some kind of readout on a screen?this
Is your spokesperson relevant? No; assume just an ordinary user of furniture. Wife or other domestic partner? He could just as well be talking to himself - and he could be 'she' as well.

Does the talking furniture provide feedback to the user during time of use?
Must it be prompted by the user, or does it "volunteer" information?
I read a great Stanislaw Lem short story, The Washing Machine Tragedy, in which competitive appliance manufacturers developed ever-more-sophisticated washing machines, to the point that they could tutor one's children. Eventually, legislation was introduced to give washing machines civil rights, until the sponsoring Senator was revealed to be a washing machine himself.

Does the talking furniture provide feedback to the user during time of use? While being used as furniture? No.
Must it be prompted by the user DOYD of 'prompted,' Yessish. See answer above.
or does it "volunteer" information? After being 'prompted,' yes.
This is nothing so sophisticated as a talking washing machine, thankfully - but I am going to read that story!

Peter invoked my favorite suggestion, "The LTPF WTF," and I'm still campaigning for that -- even though he's already put his imprimatur on it.

Is your activity on the forum relevant?
Is it relevant what exactly did the furniture say? Was the furniture a computer? Did it inform you about new message?

Is your activity on the forum relevant? No; forum individuals n.r., except as above.
Is it relevant what exactly did the furniture say? Not exact words, but general idea, yes. Was the furniture a computer? computers are involved, but are not the items of furniture in question.
Is the furniture a "Chair" - as in chairman or chairperson? You find that kind of silly too? No, but it could really be a chair, among other things.

Is it extremely important that we find out *exactly* what the furniture is? Or could we just have a vague idea?
Is it even one specific type of furniture, like a table or a bookshelf? Or a general category, such as 'things in the kitchen' or 'things people sit on'?

Is it extremely important that we find out *exactly* what the furniture is? Or could we just have a vague idea? a vague idea would be close enough.
Is it even one specific type of furniture, like a table or a bookshelf? No Or a general category, such as 'things in the kitchen' or 'things people sit on'? A general category, but not these. Perhaps more likely to be wooden furniture, but not exclusively.

Does the furniture tell you how to build it? If it needs cleaning? Does it keep track of something (your weight, daily schedule, amount of time spent using the furniture, etc)?

Would the furniture "talk" to you--before you buy it? While it's being used as furniture? While it's just sitting around in your house?

Does it have a screen? A printout? Does it email you? Interact with a smartphone?

---------------SPOILER--------------
I've misplaced the item on which this puzzle was based, but it involves the furniture having a computer chip implanted, so when it is plugged into a computer, a light will flash or a warning issued when you are putting it together wrong. Maybe IKEA already uses something like this.

Of course, if you don't plug it in in the first place, if you are the kind of person who never asks, or reads, directions, this is not going to help much!

Wow, good one. What a strange and interesting idea. Although you're right, I feel like the people that are too stubborn to read directions will be just as grumpy when their computer points out their mistakes.
