Pierre made a decision to prevent people from getting lost. But because of his decision, people get lost on a regular basis.

Yeah, I picked up on this one with the NCIS clue and the last question confirmed it. Good puzzle.

It's something like the number one ranked show on television, I think. But I'll also say you don't have to have watched the show to get the answer.

I wouldn't say it's sophisticated ;-) It's a fairly reasonable but also fairly standard sort of crime drama, but with slightly better-than-average humour mingled into it.

Apologies Balin if the NCIS reference was not cryptic enough ;-)

You forgot to mention it has Mark Harmon on it. This is definitely a selling point. And Abby... Abby is awesome.

Well, from NCIS, I can only assume we're talking about Washington, DC here? I think the guy who designed the city was French. Is this our Pierre? Does this have to do with the state-named roadways? Are there relevant streets named with numbers? letters? personal names?

Since we've figured out that it's Washington DC and the lettered streets, I think I can say this little tidbit (no $poylers): I spent the summer interning in DC, and remembered that "NCIS" tidbit, which I was able to use to avoid getting lost.

Does this have anything to do with the quadrant system? The fact that something like M Street NW would never meet up with M Street SW (if these both exist, anyway)? Is there a lettered street that relevantly appears in one quadrant? more than one quadrant? but not all quadrants?

should have figured out it was DC when urban planning was relevant, and Pierre is a historical HAM - we were taught in school about Pierre Charles L'Enfant... but that was decades ago...
Knowing what I know of Pierre's plan [or think I remember], are roundabouts relevant?

Does this have to do with the similarity between certain letters? I and J? This is it exactly.
***********SPOILERS************
When Pierre L'Enfant planned the city of Washington DC, he chose a street naming system using letters, numbers, and state names. At the time, the letters I and J were often written the same way. So to avoid confusion, the city was designed without a J Street. Practical then, but it leads to constant confusion for tourists and newcomers.

(There is no truth, btw, to the DC legend that L'Enfant left off J Street because of a feud with Founding Father John Jay. So if a tour guide tells the tale, tell him AlexanderHamilton said otherwise, and enjoy his confused stare).

Good job to all the early solves, especially Ducky. :^/

There is no truth, btw, to the DC legend that L'Enfant left off J Street because of a feud with Founding Father John Jay.

And that was mentioned in the "NCIS" episode in question, along with the actual reason for leaving out J Street. I believe the episode is "Broken Bird".
