HINT: This puzzle, which has nothing to do with the Jewish religion, relies on a common but not derogatory stereotype about Jews.Have ye no drede -- it won't offend anyone!!

An _inoffensive_ stereotype about Jews?

Hmm.

Does it relate to their perceived thriftiness? Sense of humour? Propensity to be stand-up comics? Role in the film industry? In banking? Diaspora (involving Brooklyn or another area heavily populated by Jews)? Language?

Diaspora (involving Brooklyn or another area heavily populated by Jews)? Language? none of the above!! HINT: The stereotype may be semi-obsolete; this puzzle is set in the 1970's. But in fact, a friend of mine whose wife is Jewish & who is active in the local Jewish community, says the trait in question still seems to be more common on Jews than most other groups.

This is close enough for me to declare a

******* SPOILER********

According to a book published in the 1970's, about weddings in America, hotels & catering halls don't like to put on Jewish weddings because these facilities make most of their money from markups on booze, not food, & Jews don't drink very much. Wine is used in some Jewish religious rituals, so observant Jews won't be teetotalers. But in the secular Jewish community where I grew up, I never saw anyone drink except for the ritual wine at Passover seders. In college, however, Jewish fraternity parties seemed to involve about the same amount of drinking (a lot) as gentile ones. But a colleagues of mine, whose wife is active in the Jewish community & who has lots of friends there, says he thinks Jews still drink less than gentiles. I think you should check out my new puzzle!!

Interesting. A couple of years ago I went to a wedding. The bride's mother is Christian, her father Muslim, and the grooms family is Jewish. There was plenty of booze, as well as three types of food. I think I was the only near-teetotaler there. I did have a few sips of a mixed drink, but at the time alcohol tended to make me ill. I didn't see anyone get drunk.
It's always dangerous to generalize. "All generalizations are false, including this one."

But I didn't say the stereotype was that no Jews drink, just that they drink less than most people. And I acknowledged that, even if the stereotype was ever true, it may be obsolete.
