In 1997, a world record was set in England involving 48 leaves and a yacht. Although the record could be easily broken, it is unlikely to be.

What is this record, and who set it?

leaves = the plural of leaf, as in the green things that grow on trees? or as in leaves of gold?
or leaves = the plural of leave, as in maternity leave / annual leave / sick leave?

Was the record set by one person? several people? by the boat itself?

Is there anything specific about England that made it possible to set the record? Or would any country work?

Although my current puzzle says I'll spend more time than usual on the LTPF, I really have to get off the internet now - gotta get up early tomorrow. It's weird that seen from my point of view, you live in the future where it's already tomorrow. How is the future?

The world, as far as I can discern, has not ended.

Is the person in question H/A/M? F? Was s/he on the yacht at any point of the process of setting the record?

Were the leaves identical? Did they have anything printed on them?
Did the record-setter have them with him when setting the record?

Was the yacht a normal, full - size one (as opposed to paper boats)? Was the man on the yacht while setting the record?
Did the record involve reaching the largest quantity of something? Making the longest distance? Doing something the fastest? Getting to a particular location?

Was someone on the yacht while setting the record? Was the man able to steer the yacht from the shore? Was the yacht on sea? Did the yacht belong to the man?
Did the leaves form a bigger whole (like a book)? Were the leaves all separate? Were they packed in a relevant way? Did the leaves belong to the man?
Is it unlikely that the record will be broken because it's not beneficial to the breaker? It's costly? It's useless?

years ago, my dad and I would participate in a sailboat race on Lake Union, in Seattle, each Tuesday evening in the summer, known as the "Duck Dodge," and although we're highly-capable sailors, we'd make a point of crossing the line last. We sailed the most gorgeous sloop on the water and wanted others to see it, and to tardy our finish, had to tack and jibe among all the others, which called for better seamanship than trying to win.

Nice. I had a look at the website for the Duck Dodge, but the placings only went back to third, so I suppose I wouldn't have seen the name of your impressive vessel up there.

I think it was asked before but I cannot find an answer...
Was the man the owner of the yacht?

Was the man the author of a book? Did the book consist only of 48 pages and a cover? Was it a novel? A manual? Was it read on the yacht? Was it written on the yacht?

If the man had been on the yacht when he set the record, would he have died? Been injured?

Was the book published? Is it relevant how well it sold? Did the author sail on the yacht at any stage? Did another relevant person or people sail on the yacht?

Was the man's book about the yacht? Was it the book that set the record? The writing of the book?

If the man had been on the yacht when he set the record, would he have died? yes! (although this would involve some interesting metaphysics) Been injured? see above

Was the book published? yes Is it relevant how well it sold? no Did the author sail on the yacht at any stage? no Did another relevant person or people sail on the yacht? specific people on the yacht are irrelevant, but the record could not have been set on a yacht with no people

Was the man's book about the yacht? partly Was it the book that set the record? not as a whole The writing of the book? no

Do the 48 leaves make up a particular part of the book? A chapter? a prologue or epilogue?

Was the book fiction? A factual account of something?

Did the yacht sink? Crash? Have something else bad happen to it? Did someone or someones die on the yacht?

Relevant where in the world the yacht was? Is there a relevant journey that it sailed on between two points?

Were the 48 pages the ones that mentioned the yacht?

Did one person die on the yacht? More than one? Did they die of natural causes? Accident? Murder? Drowning? Starvation? Thirst? Exposure? Were they stranded in the open sea? Did they mysteriously vanish?

Did the deaths happen in 1997? After 1997? Up to 5 years before? Up to 10 years before? Up to 50 years before? Up to 100 years before? More than 100 years before?

Was the book written in 1997?

Is the record setter Mr Paul Sloane, then? Is the record setter in fact the book's author? Someone who read the book? If I wanted to break the record, would I also have to write a book of lateral thinking puzzles?

Was one of the puzzles about the yacht? About how the people died? Should we find out more about how exactly they died?

Is the relevance of the 48 leaves just that they made up the book? Or are there more than 48 leaves in the book, but only 48 are relevant to setting the record?

Are any other puzzles from the book relevant?

Is the record to do with being the only thing meeting a certain criteria? Or the most extreme version of something?

Relevant where in the book the yacht puzzle comes? Relevant who wrote the puzzle originally (I know some of the puzzles in those books are sourced from here)? Relevant exactly what the puzzle statement was? Relevant exactly what the answer was?

Is the record one that could be discovered to be true by anyone who came across the puzzle? Is it something subjective, like 'Puzzle that Wizardofnz enjoyed the most'?

Is it relevant whether or not the yacht incident happened in real life?

If the puzzle statement was "There are some dead people in the ocean. There is a yacht floating nearby. Explain" could this record still have been set? As the record involves the largest number of something, was it the puzzle in which the most people die? YES!

***** SPOILER *****

The puzzle 'The Yacht Incident' from Paul Sloane's 1997 Perplexing Lateral Thinking Puzzles has the following puzzle statement:

'A yacht is found floating in the middle of the ocean, and around it in the water are a dozen human corpses. Why?'

As far as can be ascertained, this is the largest specified number of dead people in a published lateral thinking puzzle

Congratulations to all of you, especially Redwine for the solution and Enjar for some crucial work in the middle and endgame.

Well, I don't see why you say this record is unlikely to be exceeded. Knowing the traits of the average lateral puzzler, I'd bet someone is writing a puzzle involving more dead people right now (no, not me, haha, though maybe I should...). It's fairly easy to publish something these days, so I'd imagine given enough time it will happen.

Dead people in Lateral Thinking Puzzles are two a penny, but large specified numbers thereof less so. (That old chestnut about the phone ringing and the man realising his mistake implies several billion dead people - unless the man was very mistaken). Perhaps the existence of this puzzle will prompt a record-beater.
