Was Daniel a sportsman? Did he participate in the event where time was relevant to the result? Was his record time the longest? The shortest? Was Daniel disqualified?

Is the aim of his event to complete it in the shortest time possible?
If so, is it running? swimming? cycling?

Is it an event where all athletes compete at the same time? one after another?

Is it an individual sport? team sport?

Are we talking about the ancient Olympics? Are the Olympics in question a sports event at all?

Was anyone who entered these Olympics awarded a medal at all?

Is Daniel H/A/M?

Is this place indoors? outdoors?
Does this place offer food? entertainment? merchandise? a service?

Anyone can enter the Math Olympiad. Or well, not anyone, but any kid who hasn't graduated high school yet. But it has several rounds with increasing difficulty, and I've never made it past the municipal level. It actually goes up to an international level!

I use math in my work: trig, geometry, and occasionally, algebra -- and receive no plaudits other than work well done

folks: after that last post, I headed out the door, and intended to $poil later, as all pertinent information had been discovered... and then forgot about it. so here's the

*******SPOILER*******

Its yet another NW [Pacific Northwest region of the United States] puzzle, you stalwarts.
A mountaineer [my brother, Daniel] went up the west fork of the Dosewallips River and climbed Mount Constance [Latitude 47.77281N / Longitude 123.12735W] in the Olympic mountain range of the western peninsula of Washington state, in the NW US, beating his best time for the solo climb.
Its notorious among local mountaineers, but technically, most of the climbs to the summit are Class 3, with some mid-class 5 routes. Few climbers attempt it alone, but my brothers, both highly-adept mountaineers, are badasses [if you grow up in the Puget Sound region, you get lots of exposure to mountains and sea, and to mountaineering and sailing -- and in my family's case, we're extremely experienced at both]. I featured the other brother, Jon, in my puzzle from April 2013, no easy way out.
