Another puzzle taken from the Achievement Hunter Minecraft Let's Plays.

By forgetting the signs, Gavin allowed Ray to win the game. How?

Note: You don't need to know anything specific about Minecraft to solve this puzzle.

Not really sure where to begin with this one.

Is the game zero-sum, i.e. Ray's victory was conditional on Gavin's defeat, and the two occurred simultaneously?

Did Ray win the game by meeting a certain condition that Gavin could also have reached but was further behind in the race (such as building a certain number of objects, stockpiling a certain amount of resources, finding a certain item or place hidden within the field etc.)?

Did the signs instruct Gavin/Ray on how to play the game? How to play it well? Were they pointing to something (i.e. indicating where some object or place was)?

Signs as in things made of wood that are written upon? Did they contain rules for the game? hints? Were any of them entrance-type signs? Did he relevantly forget more than one thing?

Did Gavin allow Ray to win on a technicality (e.g. by breaking rules)? was he disqualified? Did he lose simply because Ray finished the goals better? faster? Did Gavin lose by dying? at Ray's hand(/sword/bow/trap)?

The contest involved both building and "scavenger hunting"? Is a victory monument (a la Vechs' Super Hostile maps) relevant?

Relevant what needed to be built?
Relevant what needed to be found? diamond? nether star? ender dragon egg?

Did Gavin allow Ray to win on a technicality (e.g. by breaking rules)? This, but not breaking rules was he disqualified? Did he lose simply because Ray finished the goals better? faster? Did Gavin lose by dying? at Ray's hand(/sword/bow/trap)?

The contest involved both building and "scavenger hunting"? Is a victory monument (a la Vechs' Super Hostile maps) relevant? Yes, though I'm not familiar with those particular maps

Relevant what needed to be built? No
Relevant what needed to be found? I can just say that it was the ingredients for the "victory monument" diamond? nether star? ender dragon egg?

Did the signs indicate the position of the ingredients for the victory monument?

Did Ray win by building the monument? Did Gary somehow become incapable of building the monument? If Gary had not seen the signs and determined where the necessary item(s) were, did the items, after a period of time, become somehow unobtainable to him?

Did Ray win by building the monument? Did Gavin somehow become incapable of building the monument? No to both, but follow this line of thinking (FA)

If Gavin had not seen the signs and determined where the necessary item(s) were, did the items, after a period of time, become somehow unobtainable to him? No

HINT: The signs were related to the victory monument.

Were they playing on a multiplayer map? or was each in a single player world? Was there more than one victory monument? Did Gavin accidentally build part of Ray's for him? or otherwise do something related to Ray's? or was the thing he did related only to his monument?

I'm spoiling this.

****SPOILER****

The object of the game was to (eventually) build a tower on a specific block. Signs marked which block each player was to build on. Ray started building the tower when Gavin came and killed him, took the pieces, and (since someone was about to catch up to him) quickly assembled it. However, he built it on Ray's spot, so Ray was given the win.
