Gary, openly and in the presence of many people, killed Evan's wife and got promoted.

It's possibly a well-known story so please e-mail early $poilers.

Gary = H/A/M?
Evan = H/A/M?
Evan's wife = H/A/F?

promoted = got a better position in his career?

Is it Gary's job to kill people? Did he execute Evan's wife?

Did he literally kill her, as in end her physical life in this world? Did she want to die? Would she have died anyway?

Did he mean to kill her?

Was his promotion a direct consequence of his killing Evan's wife?

Was the 'perfect quality' here one of disregarding his own feelings? To be able to follow orders without question? To not fear reprisals from anyone else, even if they were justified? Was it like a gang killing? An initiation rite?

Was Evan's wife beaking the law? Was she commiting an act of treason?

Is it relevant what exactly Gary was doing when he decided to kill Evan's wife?

Is the perfect quality Gary had the ability to make decisions without anything (like the woman he needs to kill being his monarch's wife) clouding his judgement?

I presume that Gary and Evan aren't actually their names. If you told us their real names, would we recognize either of them? Same question for the queen.

Was Gary given an order by the queen? Adultery relevant?

Does this story take place in Israel? Judea? Babylon? India? China? Japan? Korea? Persia?

Is Gary Sun Tzu? Because that's pretty much the only ancient Chinese soldier I would know.

Was the queen given an order by Gary? By Evan? Did she disobey the order, leading to her execution? Are orders involved at all, besides the order to have her killed?

Was the relevant action by the queen something that was common in ancient times? Would it be common nowadays?

I imagine this will be solved as soon as someone who ACTUALLY read The Art of War wanders into the thread.

So Sun Tzu killed the king's wife, but she wasn't a queen? Was she an empress? A princess? A ruler in her own right? Was she no more than a slave or a concubine?

If Sun Tzu was asked why he killed the wife, would he say simply, "She disobeyed an order" without any further context? Did her refusing to follow his orders imperil the king? Did it imperil the kingdom? Did it run contrary to the will of the gods? Did it run afoul of some greater duty or ideal?

Did Sun Tzu order the concubine to do something, which she did not do? Or did he order her not to do something, and she did?

Did Sun Tzu do whatever he did specifically to kill the concubine? Or maybe he had to do something, but doing it would kill the concubine? And so he told the concubine to do something so that he could do what he had to do without killing her, but she didn't obey, so Sun Tzu had no choice but to just do what he had to do, killing the concubine in process?

Is it relevant where exactly Sun Tzu killed the concubine?

The thing Sun Tzu "had to do": Did the king order him to do it? Did the concubine get in the way of the completion of his orders? Did she knowingly get in the way of his orders?

If yes: Was Sun Tzu's orders something general ("Protect my kingdom")? Or were they specific ("Fetch me my favorite spoon")?

Are some of the other people also concubines? Was Sun Tzu ordered to do something with the king's harem, to prove his commanding skills?

Are there also soldiers involved? Are they some of the other people? Was Sun Tzu ordered to test the discipline of his soldiers by tempting them with beautiful women?

Are there also soldiers involved? No. Are they some of the other people? Was Sun Tzu ordered to test the discipline of his soldiers by tempting them with beautiful women? No to all.

So if Sun Tzu was order to prove his commanding skills and there are no soldiers relevant, was Sun Tzu ordered to command the king's harem like he would soldiers? Did he execute the concubine because she disobeyed an order?

As the rest is just guessing the details, I declare a

************SPOILER**************

Chinese emperor asked famous ancient Chinese strategist Sun Tzu to prove his commanding skills, making an army of 100 emperor's concubines. Sun Tzu formed two groups and chose two emperor's favorite concubines to act as officers.
Sun Tzu gave his "army" an order and the concubines just stood there laughing. He said that this is primarily commander's fault and repeated his order. Again, no other reaction than laughing. Then Sun Tzu said if it's not commander's fault, it's officers' fault, and get two emperor's favorite concubines executed. Then, he chose new officers and repeated the order for the third time. The concubines obeyed.
Emperor went mad, but after a second thought he understood Sun Tzu motives and also the fact, that he proved the required skills. As a result, the emperor appointed Sun Tzu commander of his armies.

Thanks for playing, congrats to Alexanderhamilton for driving this one to an end.
