Redwine and I have something in common which I haven't yet found to be true with anyone else currently on the LTPF (although I could easily be wrong). Tell me, do you and I have this in common?

So, I guess we have more in common than profiles ending with -ne?
Do you know what we have in common from my profile? For something I posted?
Is my age relevant? nationality? profession? Well, that sounds weird, I got used to asking that sort of questions about someone else... :-)

Wiz and me have in common: age, eye color (at least the color we claim to have) and I guess also harmless addiction to coffee. Any of these relevant?
If no, is my profile photo relevant?

Is the common trait something in our look? Something we have from birth? Something in our environment? Something connected with our LTPF activity? Hobbies other than LTPF? Is the trait dependent on us?

OK, I've found two others who share this in common, but I'm not going to name them as there is sufficient information between the three of us, disparate as we appear to be. Bearing in mind the little lateral leap!

So let's just say 'What do I have in common with Redwine and Wiz?'

Something in our environment: where we live, what we do for living, pets, families, houses etc.
Dependent on us: hair color, professions, hobbies, living places, families, also names.
Any of these relevant?

Does this have something to do with the names of these places? Their flags? Some other symbols? Their inhabitants?

Is the thing you all have in commom relevant only for people? Or could you say that you have this in common with, for example, the Parthenon, as it's located in Greece?

So does anything located in Greece have this in common with you?

Is the location of an area enough to determine whether someone or something in this area has this in common with you? Or is some other knwoledge needed?

Are these areas defined by some official borders (borders between states, provinces etc.)? By some natural borders? By something else?

Is the location of an area enough to determine whether someone or something in this area has this in common with you? in most cases Or is some other knwoledge needed? there is one defining fact that determines whether I have it in common with them

Are these areas defined by some official borders (borders between states, provinces etc.)? not that, but very much on the right track By some natural borders? no, 'natural' would be misleading By something else? well, something specific

Was the thing that defines the areas in question created or invented by man? If so, was it developed by a lot of people over the course of many years (like a popular tradition)? Or was it created by a specific person or group of people at a specific moment (like a book or a law)? In case of the latter, was it created in [list of centuries]? in [list of continents]?

Is that thing (am I correct to assume that it's some kind of rule that divides the world into some areas?) a legal concept? Scientific? Something else? If it's scientific, is it related to geography? biology? anthropology? linguistics? sociology? some other field?

Is this thing still used nowadays? If no, was it changed due to something being changed in the world since XIX century? Or are no such things used nowadays at all?

Is the thing that you have in common with Redwine, Parthenon and the others "being located east of Greenwich"? YES

*************** SPOILER **************

I live east of the zero meridian line and therefore in the Eastern Hemisphere. This has been used as a political term, but in terms of geography alone, I'm in the east. Not all of England is in the east and I think they're actually charging you now to straddle the zero meridian line at Greenwich. It could of course have been placed anywhere on the globe, but the scientists of the time settled on Greenwich. I think the French claim that the zero meridian goes through Paris, but this is not widely accepted.

Well done Juiferrant, another Eastern Hemisphere resident.

Thanks to this very thing (and the fact that I don't usually post here during the weekend), I missed this puzzle entirely.

Further in common with Redwine, we both have the same hair colour (although she would have considerably more of it), studied law at University, and live in OECD countries that are unlikely to top GDP rankings any time soon.

Southern Ireland or Eire is now an entirely independent country. Northern Ireland belongs to the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.' Eire doesn't - since 1922. Wales and Scotland are separate countries but they do belong to the UK. They are longing to be independent, but that's not yet been achieved.

Yes, I was aware of Ireland's independence, but rather vague on how the whole UK thing works... thanks for clearing that up. In my own case, I live on the longest island in the US -- Long Island, in NY, is connected by an isthmus, so is properly a peninsula -- and the north end of my long, skinny island features a navy base and is notorious for conservative politics, whereas my south end is known for being progressive. "Militants" among us have proposed a canal in the mile-wide middle of the island, to make it two separate islands once and for all.

Solo1: There are so many islands to choose from in the "Salish Sea" [as the interior water of Washington State is considered]. Nine islands in Island County [in which I live], and many more to the north in the San Juan Archipelago.
However, Bainbridge is rather tiny [10 mi. long], compared to Whidbey Island [about 35 mi. long], where I live. Tons of artists on the island, as well as software billionaires, who help the economy run. On the south end, we've got the best telecommunication service on earth. The island also lies over a principal fault line, so when the Big Earthquake hits, we'll likely become a North and South Whidbey.
How are you aware of Bainbridge?

Yojimbo, I used to order from a mail-order bookshop there. I got the impression it was a rather trendy place.
I was also under the impression that Padre Island was the longest island in the US, certainly the longest barrier island. We don't get earthquakes, tho it might all blow away in a hurricane. Lot of sand, good fishing, and the best gelato on earth!

Solo1: no hurricanes for us, but we've got some pretty epic volcanoes. And the best fishing there is; we eat so much Dungeness crab, deep-water shrimp, and oysters I could nearly be sick of them. Not to mention salmon, halibut, rockfish, cod, sole, clams, mussels... I like running puzzles about fish; perhaps it's time for another one. And many claim the longest island, especially the Long Islanders. Padre Island is perhaps the longest barrier island, but locals here tell stories about Congress declaring Whidbey's status. I don't know the details. And indeed, Bainbridge is pretty trendy, but once you get out of town, it's a pretty rural place. Still lots of forests around here.

Sad to say but Lynne is correct, I do not live in an Island State but quite obviously do live on an Island.

Also it gave me a chuckle that Ireland's turbulent 800 year relationship with Britain can be chopped down to 'the whole UK thing'. The story takes a bit longer than that to tell and I've lectured at length on this subject before.

"The whole UK thing"

*bursts out laughing*

Yes, Peter, yes you have, like on my Tortiesibling's geographical scrund. Sadly she seems to have no time at all for lateral puzzling these days *feels sad for Tortiekitten*

I have to say I find your amusement bemusing.
Sorry, but am I the only one who could not have accurately testified, in a bewigged court, regarding Lynne's posted Venn diagram regarding the UK? Where I come from, it doesn't appear on the backs of cereal boxes or on primary school flashcards.
I live in a place that was once part of the British Commonwealth? Kingdom? Even that's unclear. To reach the continent, I cross a body of water named "Possession Sound," on the shores of which Vancouver claimed possession for mad king Geo III. I'm surrounded by other places hubristically named by that upwardly-mobile RN leftenant, although some already been reverentially-named by the people who'd dwelt here for centuries.
I wrote an essay long ago regarding the imperial "commonwealth," but am reluctant to post a link lest I spark any flame.

Trust me, Yojimbo, myself and most of my fellow Brits wouldn't be able to accurately describe the information on the Venn diagram. I've been confused as to British Isles and Great Britain, and as for Crown Dependencies I never had that name for them, although I knew that the islands referred to were independent, although I wouldn't know whether they can vote in 'our' elections.

Ahh, you should check out a YouTube video by a fellow named CGP Grey, called The Difference Between the United Kingdom, Great Britain, England and a Whole Lot More. Cleared up much of my confusion on the issue, and even comes with a handy dandy Venn diagram of sorts.

"..that upwardly-mobile RN leftenant.."
..but isn't it lieutenant in the RN and leftenant in the Army? or do I have that backwards? Lynne? Anybody?
