A man changes employers. While there was nothing unusual about this it did cause something of a furore and even offended some people who held a particular political belief. Most people, however, just found it somewhat amusing.

The man's job has nothing to do with politics.

Can you explain?

Did the man change also a job? Or did he do the same job for different employers? Was the man's job unique?
Are the reasons for this change relevant?
Was one employer governmental and the other private?
Does the particular political view include being against changing jobs? Against man's job? Against one of involved employers?

Did he change codes? Was he merely traded from one team to another? Are the teams' names relevant? Is his name?

Is the particular belief a broad-church belief such as conservativism or liberalism, or something specific such as religious fundamentalism, libertarianism, or animal welfarism?

Did his new team have to pay his former team a relevant sum of money? Yes but nothing out of the ordinary and not relevant
Does the particular view concern huge sums paid on football contracts? No Loyalty issue (staying in the club that trained player)? No, that is a very common cause of disgruntlement amongst fans

The offended people need not be fans of either team by the way.

If the player had changed his former team to another one than he actually did, would the people of that political view still have been offended? If the player had changed teams other way round (not A-B but B-A), would the people of that political view still have been offended?
Is player's nationality relevant? Is it relevant in which countries were the teams?

If the player had changed his former team to another one than he actually did, would the people of that political view still have been offended? It would require a coincidence to have arisen with another team but it certainly could have If the player had changed teams other way round (not A-B but B-A), would the people of that political view still have been offended? Same answer as above
Is player's nationality relevant? It is yes Is it relevant in which countries were the teams? He transfered from one english team to another. Not hugely relevant

A little hint: think of things that might change as a result of switching teams

So the player was not English? Is his specific nationality relevant beyond being not English?
If so,[list]...

Was the situation on the new team more relevant for people getting offended? Or the old team?

Did he contend on the new team with another player in the line-up? Was that guy English? A fan favourite? Is this relevant at all?

Did this happen in the pre-Bosman era (where the number of foreigners in the line-up was restricted)? Relevant?

Sleepingbeaver - Love that name btw

So the player was not English? Correct Is his specific nationality relevant beyond being not English? Yes
If so,[list]... Begorrah he's an Irishman

Was the situation on the new team more relevant for people getting offended? Or the old team? Not 100% sure what you mean by situation. There was no cause for offence when he was with his old team. It arose only when he joined his new club

Did he contend on the new team with another player in the line-up? Was that guy English? A fan favourite? Is this relevant at all? I'm afraid not

Did this happen in the pre-Bosman era (where the number of foreigners in the line-up was restricted)? No it's a fairly recent transfer Relevant? No

Does "Ireland [Jersey number]" stand for a united Ireland? Were Northern Irish people therefore offended? That'll do nicely and so....

***********SPOILER**************

Stephen Ireland's transfer from Aston Villa to Stoke City caused some mirth and outrage on my little island. On joining his new team Stephen was randomly assigned the squad number 32 meaning the back of his jersey bore the legend 'Ireland 32'.

This was interpreted by some as a policital slogan referencing a desire to see the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland (Eire) reunited with the 6 counties of Northern Ireland.

In truth only a small number of loyalists (those who wish to maintain the union of Northern Ireland with Britain) took offence. Most people regarded it as a humourous coincidence.

The number 32 does have huge symbolism in Ireland so I'm surprised nobody spotted the potential problem when assigning Stephen's number.

Thanks for playing and nicely finshed off Doriana.
