A girl asked a boy a question. The boy answered truthfully. This upset the girl. Why?

Are their exact ages relevant? If so, [LTPF list of integers between 0 and 12] for both.

Did she ask him the question in person? Relevant where they were when she asked the question?

Was it a yes/no question? A wh-question?

Was the question about the girl? about the boy? about another person? about an object? about something intangible?

Did the girl misunderstand the answer?

Did the object belong to the girl? To anyone known to either of them?

Was it a small, portable object? Was it related to health, hygiene or intimacy? Would a young child be expected to know what the object was, or its purpose? Would knowledge of this item's being or purpose be understood to decrease the child's innocence?

If she had asked an adult the same question, would the adult be more likely to lie? Would they do this to protect the child?

Had the girl had the object long? Was it a recent acquisition? Did she find it somewhere?

Did the object present a threat to her? Would it eventually? Was she supposed to have it?

Was the girl upset because she thought she had done something wrong? Did she think her having the object reflected badly on her? Did her learning of the objects nature reveal the true nature of an act she'd done in the past? Did she find the concept of the object particularly upsetting in and of itself?

Were the circumstances surrounding the question particularly unusual or specific? Was her question urgent? Had something happened, caused by or involving the object, that motivated her to ask the question?

Is it relevant how the girl got the object?
Did she get it from the boy?
And she asked the boy "why do you give me this"?
And the boy responded that he didn't like the object? Or that mother told him to give it to the girl?

I had that situation yesterday. I give my scouts free guitar lessons and yesterday one boy brought a chocolate for me. I asked "what is that for", and the boy said: "Mum told me to give it to you".

Did she ask what the object actually was? About some aspect of the nature of the object? About what it's used for?

Had she expected it to be more valuable? More sentimentally valuable? Rarer? Did she want it to do something it was incapable of doing?

Had she broken the object? Had she attempted to use it, and either failed in her objective or caused something unexpected to happen? Is the item indeed functional, or mostly decorative? Was it a mirror?

Did she ask about the history of the object? Did the scope of her question extend beyond the object itself? Primarily beyond the object? Did she ask about similar objects, or other examples of the same object? Did she ask about how the object fit into the grand scheme of things?

Was the thing that happened involving the object that prompted her question instigated by the object itself? Was the object electronic? Mechanical? Did it have some capacity to perform functions without the input of a human?

Did she ask about something the object did?

I can see you're positively thrilled with all these poignant questions cutting to the heart of the puzzle.

OK, so it's at least a little bit attractive, but not primarily decorative, correct? Is it something that primarily serves a purpose but can be made to look pretty? Especially for children (or perhaps females)?

In terms of functionality - what I mean is that one does not simply leave the item there to look pretty. Is it a tool of some kind? A leisure activity that one interacts with? You said it's neither electronic nor mechanical nor capable of performing functions without human input. Is it something that is both decorative and somehow 'used', such as a couch cushion or a doll or a really sparkly ball or a galileo thermometer or my first alphabet freize (although the last two are 'used' rather passively)

Are there words on this object? Or does this object somehow convey information?

Was this book the first in the series? Last? Somewhere in the middle? Had the girl read the book in question at the time of talking to the boy? Had she read previous books in the series? Later books? Had the boy read the whole series? Did the girl say something like "I can't wait to read this, x is my favourite character in this series, does he have a big part in this one?" and the boy replied "oh no,he dies on page 4"?

Did she ask him about the plot specifically? A certain character? His feelings on the book?

Is it relevant exactly what kind of spioler he told her? Is it just enough that he ruined the book for her?

Had she read previous books in the series? Later books? Neither, but she was in the middle of reading another that came... later, let's say.

Which means that there is an FA and I have unintentionally been giving misleading answers. Sorry.

Another hint: The two books were children's mysteries, and part of the same series.

Hmmm - Nancy Drew?

If not, was the protagonist male or female?
Or was it an animal? e.g. Incognito Mosquito?

Hmmm - Nancy Drew? No

If not, was the protagonist male or female? I think there were two protagonists, one male, one female. But you don't need to know the series to solve the puzzle.
Or was it an animal? e.g. Incognito Mosquito?

RECAP:

A girl asked a boy a question. The boy answered truthfully. This upset the girl. Why?

The girl's question was related to a book the boy was reading, a children's mystery. Another book in the same series is relevant.

Do the characters she asks about appear in both relevant books?

It's a while since I've posted on this puzzle so forgive me if I'm retreading ground.

So, the boy was reading a mystery book, and the girl was reading another book from later in the same series?

And the girl asked the boy a question about the book he was reading? Or about the one she was reading? And the answer to that question spioled the book she was reading? Did a relevant plot point develop between the two books which was spioled for the girl?

Are the books whodunnit type mysteries? If so, did he reveal whodunnit in the girl's book?

Are the books whodunnit type mysteries? Sort of. I'd call them "multiple choice whodunits" If so, did he reveal whodunnit in the girl's book? Yes

Did her question relate to who did it in the boy's book? Did the boy realise that his answer would spiol the girl's book? Did he know at the time that she was reading that book? That she didn't yet know the ending?

She asks about two characters? Does one of them appear in her book and the other in his book? Is one of them a culprit? Both of them? Is one of them a victim? Both of them?

Does the culprit from the girl's book also appear in the boy's book? Does the culprit from the boy's book also appear in the girl's? Does the character who appears in both books act as the culprit in both?

Is the girl's question 'who did it in your book?' 'who do you think the culprit will turn out to be?'

Does he guess right? Does he guess the person who is the culprit in the girl's book? Does he say something like 'well it can't be the butler, because he's the culprit in another of these books'? Or 'I guess it will be the butler's wife, because that explains why he commits the crime in the next book'?

Does he guess right? Does he guess the person who is the culprit in the girl's book? Does he say something like 'well it can't be the butler, because he's the culprit in another of these books'? This is basically it. There's one bit of information left, but you've got the solution, so... Or 'I guess it will be the butler's wife, because that explains why he commits the crime in the next book'?

****SPOILER****

(I'm calling the two people This Person and That Person, and the two books One Book and The Other Book.)

About 10-12 years ago, my sister and I were reading a pair of Carmen Sandiego books while on vacation in Maine. She read One Book and I read The Other Book, then we switched. Towards the end, when only two suspects were left for each of us, she asked who I thought was the culprit in One Book, and I said "This Person". She asked why, and I replied truthfully, "Because That Person did it in The Other Book". She was upset because I'd just spoiled the book for her.

Nice work Enjay.
