They tried to be innovative. But because of something that wasn't planned, their innovation seemed ridiculous.

Did this happen in the modern era? Middle ages? BC?

Did they try to be innovative by developing a new product? Making amendments to an existing one?

Did they try a new business practice or approach to solving a problem?

Are they a company? A government? A non-profit organisation? A family?

Was the unplanned something another innovation or invention? An accident of some sort? A disaster? A key historical event?

Did the innovation seem ridiculous due to being already obsolete? Because the unplanned something caused circumstances to change so that the innovation was less effective or would now be cruel or cause some other problem?

Did the company perpetrate the disaster? Was it an environmental disaster? Fire? Explosion? Oil spill?

Did the innovation, or the attempt to use the innovation, cause the disaster to happen?

Was the problem-solving related to the company's business/operations? Did they hope their innovation could be sold to or used by other companies or organisations?

Wizardofnz:

Did the company perpetrate the disaster? I don't know and it's irrelevant to the puzzle. Was it an environmental disaster? Fire? It was the fire. Explosion? Oil spill?

Did the innovation, or the attempt to use the innovation, cause the disaster to happen? I don't know and it's irrelevant to the puzzle. Assume that innovation and fire are not cause and effect.

Was the problem-solving related to the company's business/operations? No. Did they hope their innovation could be sold to No. or used by other companies or organisations? Possibly.

What do you mean by "headline puzzle"?

Is it relevant what the company normally does? Do they sell products? services? Relevant how big the company is?

Doriana:
What do you mean by "headline puzzle"? The clue of the puzzle is based on headlines I read some time ago.

Is it relevant what the company normally does? No. Do they sell products? I guess they are a factory, so they produce goods. services? Relevant how big the company is? It wouldn't possibly work for a very small company. Otherwise, not relevant.

You have all the necessary information to guess one of the headlines involved.

Did the factory burn down? Did they produce anything related to fire? Such as fire extinguishers? Relevant what they did produce?
I imagine the headline "Fire extinguisher factory fire extinguished", OTRT?

Did the factory burn down? You may assume so. Did they produce anything related to fire? Such as fire extinguishers? Relevant what they did produce? No.
I imagine the headline "Fire extinguisher factory fire extinguished", OTRT? No. Two headlines are involved.

Is it relevant how the fire started? Or how it spread to destroy the factory? Is it relevant that it was destroyed by fire specifically? Or would another cause work? If so: natural cause? Man-made cause?

Do we need to know more about the fire itself? Or is knowing that it was destroyed by fire enough? Did they do some thing to save the environment? But the fire created much more pollution?

"Factory installs new heating system, which works beyond expectations" (plus a picture of the smoking ruins), or something like that? Yes, something like that :-)

*********SPOILER************
I saw two subsequent headlines in the internet, one under another:
"Factory X's alternative solution for heating"
"Fire at Factory X".

Thanks for playing, and my special thanks to Galfisk for bringing this puzzle to an end.
