Did Doug went halfway up the M1 directly from his home? After the phone call, did he go directly home?
Is the distance between Doug's home and phone-call place relevant?
When starting his way up the M1, did Doug know he would make a phone call? Did he go up the M1 only to make a call?

Had he intended to return home after making the phone call?

Had he intended, or did he suspect, that he may need to make a phone call? That particular phone call?

Did he stop at that payphone as it was the first one he encountered? Had he hoped he wouldn't have to travel quite so far along the M1?

Is he satisfied with the outcome of the phone call? Is he annoyed? Was he annoyed at having to place the call? Is he acting in his professional capacity at any stage of the puzzle?

whoops, no idea how that post turned up again - please ingnore it.

Did he call a public service or organisation? Did he call because of something he saw? Felt? Heard? Smelled? Thought of? Did he need to give someone an important message?

Would this have worked on another road? Or is there something particular about the M1?

Wizardofnz:

Had he intended to return home after making the phone call?
To clarify the first question; When he set out, did he intend to drive along the M1, make a call, and return home afterwards? No - I refer you to Redwine's previous question:

When starting his way up the M1, did Doug know he would make a phone call? No

Not sure if that answers the question?

Had he intended, or did he suspect, that he may need to make a phone call? That particular phone call? No

Did he stop at that payphone as it was the first one he encountered? Yes

Had he hoped he wouldn't have to travel quite so far along the M1? Please rephrase... depends on when he did the 'hoping'.

Is he satisfied with the outcome of the phone call? The phone call achieved all he hoped it would, Yes

Is he annoyed? Somewhat, yes

Was he annoyed at having to place the call? FA - he didn't 'have' to make it; he 'chose' to make it

Is he acting in his professional capacity at any stage of the puzzle? Yes

Jondahr:

Did he call a public service or organisation? No

Did he call because of something he
saw? No
Felt? No
Heard? Yes
Smelled? No
Thought of? No, other than processing what he'd heard

Did he need to give someone an important message? No

Would this have worked on another road? Not any other road, but many other roads

Or is there something particular about the M1? No

So if there is not an unhappy occurrence in the puzzle (are you sure this is the LTPF?), There's mild anger, but nothing more 'unhappy' than this - no occurrences such as death, crime, divorce or people throwing themselves off cliffs.

So there is a happy occurrence: the birth of a child? coming into a sum of money? a milestone for a child or other relative, e.g. passing a test? passing a test himself? something else?

And the 'mild anger' was at not having heard about it earlier?

Was Doug mistaken
about the date? Yesish
About the time? No

Would Doug encounter unpleasant consequences if he continued the journey to his original destination? Mildly unpleasant

Did Doug encounter unpleasant consequences as he decided to return home? No

Is Doug a professional lorry driver? Yes

Did he carry a cargo? Was he supposed to transport his cargo to his original destination? It's largely irrelevant - let's say that his lorry was empty and his original destination was the place he would have gone to collect his cargo.

Did he learn from the radio that it was a holiday, so that there would be noone working in his destination place? Yes - he learnt from the radio that it was a Saturday, and he only works Monday to Friday. Nicely done :-)

So that explains why he turned round and went home.

But the questions remain:
- why did he make the phonecall?
- why didn't he already know it was Saturday?

As for why he didn't know it was Saturday: was that 'his fault,' i.e. he had just misplaced a day? I've done that!
Or was someone else responsible?
Did he become aware of the day of the week from the volume of traffic?
Did this happen some years ago, when cell phones were not in wide use?

Lynne:

Events that only happen on a Saturday? At some point, yes

Wizardofnz:

Did he hear Rebecca Black's 'Friday'? No

Lynne:

Somehow a repeat of your answers at 9.02 have appeared at 9.40. Two questions are in danger of being overlooked. Thanks! How odd, not sure how I did that :-S

Was it April Fools? Did the radio first say something indicating it was not Saturday? If yes, did they say it on purpose?

***************Spoiler***************

Doug was a lorry driver by profession and lived in London, UK.

He awoke early and turned Capital FM on the radio - "Capital FM" is a local radio station in London, and the largest of its kind. The familiar voice of DJ Chris Tarrant introduced some music on his weekday Breakfast Show to entertain his listeners as they got up for work, and the Breakfast Team's newsreader then read the news. Doug got up, went through his normal morning routine, and went off to pick up his lorry for work. He set off with his cargo, happy that the roads weren't that busy, and had made good time as he started up the M1, heading north to his destination.

Everything so far, apart perhaps from the lack of traffic, was just the same as any other morning.

And around London, dozens of other Capital FM listeners were on their way to work, idly noticing that the rush hour wasn't as bad as usual but not thinking much about it.

Until they turned up at work to find the office shut.

Because this morning was 01/04/1995.

And it was a Saturday.

And it was April Fools Day.

And Chris Tarrant and the Breakfast Team, whose show at the time ran from 0600-1000 on Monday-Friday, spent the hours of 0600-0900 on Saturday morning encouraging people to shake off their morning blues and wishing them a good day at work - while the regular Capital FM Saturday morning team had a morning off. And Chris and team then spent 0900-1000 playing messages they'd been receiving from listeners who had been fooled into thinking it was Friday, and had gone to work. Doug, halfway up the M1, was one of the more extreme!

All a true story - and one I remember listening to at the time, while I double-checked that I really didn't have to get up and go to school.

A bit like when people don't put their clocks back, sleep through Sunday and then go to work an hour early on Monday - the security staff where I worked had go in early every year because several people always always turned up an hour early. They all noticed how much quieter the traffic was.

Or get to church an hour late in the summer and wonder why The Archers wasn't on the radio that morning...

In the 1970s Noel Edmunds was a one for playing tricks on people, set up by their friends. I will always remember him phoning someone as if he was an examiner at the test centre for learner drivers. The person was due to take their test the next day, so it set them into a panic finding their test being brought forward. 'And I'm afraid we're out of cars today, would you mind taking the test in a double decker bus??'
