Roy received a phone call. The caller asked him a totally innocent question. Roy has been expecting this question for some time and was afraid of it. He gave the response that he considered safe. But the next day he knew it was the worst response.

Who called, what was the question and the response?

It is a joke-based puzzle, so please e-mail early spiolers.

Is Roy H/A/M? Is his profession relevant? His marital status?

Is the caller H/A/M? H/A/F? Does he know the caller? Is it his wife? girlfriend? a relative? a friend? a co-worker? his boss?

Doriana:
Is Roy H/A/M? Yes. Is his profession relevant? Yes. His marital status? No.

Is the caller H/A/M? H/A/F? Human adult, irrelevant if M or F. Does he know the caller? No. Is it his wife? No. girlfriend? No. a relative? No. a friend? No. a co-worker? No. his boss? No.

Balin:
Did he know the caller? No. Caller - H/A/M? Could have been, see above. Roy - H/A/M? Yes.

Any other people besides the two relevant? Several other are peripherally relevant, they're human adults, irrelevant if men or women, the exact number of these people is irrelevant.

Was his answer "worse" than other answers because it cost him money? because it cost someone ELSE money? because it cost him? or someone else? an opportunity? because it made him look stupid? because it otherwise made him look bad/hurt his reputation? the same as the last two, but again with someone else?

Is he a phone-a-friend on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? No, but it's excellent alternative solution.

I've heard a joke along these lines before, but it's not really appropriate for LTPF, so I'm guessing that's not it.

Was Roy's answer interpreted literally when he meant it figuratively? Did they take a word to have a different meaning than what Roy meant, even though both would be literal meanings? Would such interpretation be likely to offend someone who had asked for what Roy asked for. Did Roy like ducks (or some other animal) and ask for one meaning as a pet, but he got a cooked duck (or whatever animal it was)?

Right, so Roy the sort-of-politician is asked by someone who doesn't know him what he wants for Christmas, and he gives an answer that makes him look foolish-ish and ruins his reputation.

Was he asked by a member of the press? Was his answer given very publicly?

Was his response perfectly innocent (i.e. not a particularly greedy, controversial or privileged thing to ask for for Christmas)? Did the reporting make his response look less innocent than it was?

World peace? Peace on Earth? Something like that? But then he wanted to go to war? Is Roy a political activist but not actually an officeholder? Did his Christmas wish conflict with his activism stance(s)?

World peace? Peace on Earth? These two are not Roy's response but are SO MUCH OTRT to the other parto of the puzzle... Something like that? But then he wanted to go to war? No. Is Roy a political activist but not actually an officeholder? No. Roy was a diplomat. The puzzle would also work if he was an officeholder, but not an activist without a position. Did his Christmas wish conflict with his activism stance(s)? No.

********SPOILER************
Roy, who is the Ambassador of Z, is particularly afraid of corruption accusations. Before Christmas, a journalist calls him and asks about Roy's Christmas wishes. Roy, regarding this as a corruption attempt, does not want to tell any wish, but journalist insists. Finally Roy says that the basket of fruits would be perfect. He thinks that fruits are innocent enough that nobody would accuse him for corruption. The next day Roy reads the newspaper article, where it's written that Ambassador of X wants peace on Earth, Ambassador of Y wants no more hunger to all people and Ambassador of Z wants the basket of fruits.

Thanks for playing!
