True story, based on something my flatmate did in 2010. Country is irrelevant.

A woman is walking down a quiet residential street. She knocks on the door of several strangers and offers them a small item, which they gladly accept. Some even offer her an almost identical item in return, which she accepts. Eventually, she reaches the house of another stranger who offer her a large item. She laughs, hugs the stranger, and returns home.

Over the course of the next week, she finds a series of different strangers knocking on her own door and offering her the same, small item. She accepts them all. Then she never relevantly sees any of them again.

What was going on?

Long shot: Christmas relevant? Christmas cookies? How about chocolate?

Long shot: Christmas relevant? no Christmas cookies? no How about chocolate? Generally, I'm for it. But it plays no role in this solution.

Did the woman visit houses at night? Did she accept the large item from the stranger? Did she do this once? Does she do it regularly? If yes, does she do it during a fixed time of a year?
Could the situation have happened if she visited offices? Was she paid to do this? Did the stranger offering large item understand what he wanted from him?
Did small items have something written on them? If yes, was it the woman's address?
Is it relevant how the woman acquired the items?

Is there a particular pattern to the houses that she visits? Or are they random choices on her part? Is she doing a good deed? rasing money for charity? Is she rewarding the strangers in some way?

Is she wearing any type of uniform? Does she need to produce i.d. to do what she's doing? Is she a member of a relevant organisation? While Christmas is irrelevant would she only do this at a specific time of the year? If not would she do this regularly? Daily? weekly? monthly? or is it a one-off thing?

Is each small item she gives identical to each other? Are all the recepients the same sex? Female? relevant?

Is the large item she receives just a bigger version of the small item she has been handing out?

Redwine:

Could the situation have happened if she visited offices? most probably not Was she paid to do this? no Did the stranger offering large item understand what he wanted from him? yes
Did small items have something written on them? yes! If yes, was it the woman's address? yes!
Is it relevant how the woman acquired the items? yes

Good questions.

Peter365:

Lynne:"

First Footing at the New Year relevant? *googles* Interesting, but no. She'd probably be considered bad luck

Yojimbo:

Is she distributing flowers? no Hope so; that would be a sweet gesture. It would; particularly with that reciprocal aspect.

Clarification: All 'small items' discussed in this puzzle are mostly identical. Some contained the woman's address, some did not

Redwine:

Is the relevant natural disaster a hurricane? yes Did it mess items from all the neighbourhood? yes Are the items letters? And yes.

OK, we're almost there. We just need to focus on the nature of the large item and the sequence of the giving and receiving.

Doriana:

Is the relevant natural disaster the 2010 Christchurch Earthquake? No - I tried to make this non-city specific. But thanks for thinking of us :-)

So, she gives those people letters with their address on it, and receives letters with her name on them in return?
Is the large item her mailbox?
Do the people who come to her place afterwards also give her letters?

Did it have half of the address on it? Did it have only name but not the address? Was the item unique so that the stranger recognize it was hers? Did she announce that she was looking for this item?
Did the stranger know who was the owner of the item before the woman came to his house?

***** SPOILER *****

In 2010, the Wellington suburb of Karori was hit by a hurricane. As a result, people's letters (and, indeed, letterboxes) were strewn up and down the streets. The woman has taken all the mail that has landed on her property and is returning it to its rightful owners. Her letterbox was blown into the yard of her neighbour, who returns it to her. Since her address is now visible, people more readily approach her with her personal mail that has blown into their yards.

Observation: People in Karori are far more likely to know the names of their neighbours than those in other suburbs. It skews the social statistics somewhat.

Well done, Doriana and Redwine.
