Mike spent some time in a mental hospital. He was quite sane, though. That's why he chose not to do something that he was rather good at. Instead he did something for which he had less skill, figuring he had a better chance of fame, if not fortune, that way. And he did not become famous, if perhaps not in the way he had intended.

Did he do the something for which he had less skill before his time in the mental hospital? during his time there? afterwards?

Was he a patient in the mental hospital?

Did he become more infamous than famous? Did his actions cause a great deal of damage? Financial loss? Injury or death? To himself?

Did he relevantly talk to someone in the mental hospital to inspire his choice to do something he was less skilled at? A patient?

Oxford dictionary relevant at all? (It probably wouldn't have thought much of that sentence fragment)

Did he do something he was good at while in mental hospital? Did something happen that inspired his decision about quitting the hospital?

Did he become more infamous than famous? Yope, DOYD of 'infamous' Did his actions cause a great deal of damage? Financial loss? Yopish, but not seriously, and n.r. Injury or death? To himself? He did get bunged up a bit, but not seriously. Nobody else injured.

Did he relevantly talk to someone in the mental hospital to inspire his choice to do something he was less skilled at? A patient? No, and I have to confess that I included the mental hospital bit to attract attention. Although true, it has no relation to the rest of the puzzle - IMO anyway.

Oxford dictionary relevant at all? No.??

Did he do something he was good at while in mental hospital? N.R. Did something happen that inspired his decision about quitting the hospital? Let me stipulate, as I should have probably done before, that he was in the hospital merely as a convenience to himself. It had nothing to do with the decisions he made.

Oops - in looking at the original puzzle statements, I discover that I said that he 'did not' become famous. Don't know where that 'not' came from. :-0 He certainly did become famous for the requisite 15 minutes, anyway.

Was he pretending to be a patient? No; more like he was a guest.

Please, forget about the mental hospital. I'm sorry I ever brought it up! It's what Mike did later that raised doubts about his sanity: giving up something that he could do well, for something that he could not do so well.

Nudge on the Right Track: Try to find out his field of endeavor.

Hints: The title is relevant.

And Admin's puzzle is also relevant, in a way.

Did he do craft work with the patients?
Or did he do sports?
Did he do what he was less capable of in order to relate better to the patients?

Did he do craft work with the patients? No. The patients are not relevant. It's what he did after he left the hospital that is relevant.
Or did he do sports? Yes, the puzzle is sports-related.
Did he do what he was less capable of in order to relate better to the patients? No, he did it out of self-interest.

I want to start 2014 with a clean slate, so here's a hint:

The theoretical (not actual) bird involved is not an owl, but another kind of raptor, an eagle, to be specific.

A theoretical bird?? I don't think you have suggested in any of your answers that a bird was even yopishly involved in this puzzle!

Oh, I just saw the title. So, did his sport involve birds somehow? eagles? or are eagles involved metaphorically here (like, for example, as a symbol of the United States)?

Is it relevant that getting two strokes under par in golf is called an "eagle"?

Hint: He is not a US citizen; might help to find out his nationality.

So it involves sport, and presumably being very cold.

Is it skiing? Is the Eagle Mount programme relevant?

So it involves sport, and presumably being very cold? Bingo! Er..that is, it's not outdoor Bingo - but there's an idea. It does involve sports, and cold.
Is it skiing? Yes! Is the Eagle Mount programme relevant? Not to my knowledge, because I don't know what that is. I've led a sheltered life.

It's a recreational therapy organisation for the disabled. It started in 1983, with a view to teaching the disabled how to ski.

So, his nationality is relevant. Is he nordic? Did he invent nordic skiing? Is he from a country that is typically well-represented at the winter olympics? Is he from a country in which skiing is not a popular pastime? Is he from a country in which the geography is not at all conducive to skiing?

Is he from a country in which skiing is not a popular pastime? Is he from a country in which the geography is not at all conductive to skiing? It is possible to ski in this country, and a fair number do. But it's not the first sport you would think of in connection with this country.

Ok, then...here's the

===== SPOILER ==============

The man in question is "Eddie the Eagle" Edwards (Michael is his real first name, so it's indeed Mike), who managed to come to Olympics (and to fame, and even to riches for a short while) by being Britain's only ski jumper, although his ski jumping skills were far from competitive. He was quite good at various other sports, but wouldn't have a chance to make the Olympics in either...

Yes, Edwards got the reputation of being something of a klutz, but he was a pretty good skier. He chose to compete as a ski-jumper, tho, because he thought there would be less competition for a spot on the UK team, and there was - he won by default. Came in dead last in the 70m and 90m events, but with the British sympathy for the underdog and the American admiration for audacity, he became something of a celebrity.
And Sleepingbeaver gets the gold!
