How recent? In the last year? Last five years? Last ten? Twenty? A bit more?
Computers relevant? Internet relevant? Texting relevant?
Acronyms relevant? [I cringe when I hear people saying "LOL" -- I'm old school; you just laugh, instead...]

I'm torn between working out the lateral connection with German and brute-forcing the name of the language so we can carry on with the lateral aspect of the puzzle.

Is it Russian? Is it a Baltic language? A Slavic language? A Nordic language? Hungarian? Romanian? Albanian? Greek?

Is it german sign language? Is it some other non-oral language? Are codes or cyphers relevant? Is it a programming language? Do a large number of people communicate in it? Is it more closely associated with a certain profession, hobby, or age group?

Is it the gothic font used in speech bubbles when German characters are speaking in the Asterix comics?

Do a large number of people communicate in it? Is it more closely associated with a certain profession, hobby, or age group?

Get out of my head, Redwine

Does the technological innovation concern communications technology? Bio-medical technology? Forensic technology?

Are the changes largely to the vocabulary of German sign language, or the way it is used? The places in which it is used?

Does the vocabulary need to change to accommodate certain new terminology? Does new technology mean that existing 'words' or 'phrases' have double or confusable meanings? Are words for new phenomena best described using gestures that may appear rude, and so words would have to be changed retrospectively?

Turtles relevant at all? turtle graphic?
Is there a word that is now signalled in a different way? because the handling of some item has changed over the last 30 years? (like for a telephone)
Were signs changed because people got confused about their meaning? was there a sign that was misleading? difficult to identify? not politically correct?
Skype relevant? (which allows speech-impaired people to make phone calls in sign language)

********SPOILER********
In German sign language, the sign for taking photos is changing at the moment. It used to be a two-hand sign that looked like you were taking a photo with a traditional camera, but with the rise of smartphones, it has started to be replaced with the one-hand gesture of taking a pic with an iPhone.
