Literally or figuratively? The high jump event takes place after the track events?

Am I/we late for anything specific? Is my/our period late? Am I/we dead?

Is the name of any celebrated high jumper, living or dead, relevant?

The greatest decision ever made in the history of the high jump was the innovation of the Fosbury flop. The second greatest decision ever made in the history of the high jump was naming this technique after Mr. Fosbury's second name.

Is the High Jump sport relevant in any way? Can't help feeling there's a joke involved here, is there? Or a pun at least? Recent news events relevant?

Are you a pole vaulter? No I'm german and how did you know my name is walter. An oldie I know and not as funny as Wiz's Fosbury observation which is hilarious.

I certainly will be . It would be a pleasure to meet you. Remind me closer to the time and we can arrange it. I work fairly near to the city centre so anywhere there will be fine.

Is the expression 'raising the bar' relevant? Are both 'yous' in the puzzle statement the same person? An athlete? and this person is dead yes?

Did the athlete win a competition at the Olympics? the high jump competition?
Relevant that the high jump is usually one of the last competitions in a track and field event?
Did the athlete arrive late for the competition he/she initially wanted to take part in? and so, decided to do the high jump instead?
(Gerd Wessig at the 1980 Olympics would have been my first guess, but he is still alive ..)
Anyway: was the athlete male? female?
Are both "yous" in the puzzle statement referring to the same person? (just in case)

I have been having a feeling about this, but I also have a feeling I'm wrong -

If it's who I think it is, I'm shocked to learn that they are all dead.

Nevertheless -
Were the athletes from the USA, and was it the fault of their coach that they were late?

Was there something unique about their attendance at the games? was it their countries first olympics? We are talking about the summer olympic games yes? are all the athletes dead because the games took place a long time ago? Was it the london games in 1948? Munich 1936? I'm loathe to invoke the LTPF list of games of the modern olympiad.

Any political issues? boycotts?

Well done Beaver.

The Russian team turned up 12 days late for the 1908 Olympic games because they were still using the Julian calendar.
