On a complete impulse, Sandra steals something valuable from work one night and goes straight home. The next morning, she calls the police and confesses, apologizing profusely and asking them to please come take it back. They do, and also search her home and her person, to be sure the didn't steal anything else. She's clean. They decide not to press charges, thank her for her honestly, and leave. A huge grin spreads across Sandra's face.

Was her apologizing sincere? Was the thing she stole alive? technology? Did she pull a "switcheroo"? Does she grin because they let her off? because she has won a bet (or something along those lines)? because she has gotten rid of the thing she stole? because she was successful at a con she was playing?

And just to make sure... All "she"s and "her"s refer to Sandra? All "they"s refer to the police?

Did Sandra need the stolen thing only for that short time between stealing and calling the police? Did Sandra need the thing at all? Did Sandra need a reason to call the police? Did Sandra want to be searched and found clean?

Is she covering her bases for a bigger crime that she's committed? Is it relevant exactly what she stole?

And just to make sure... All "she"s and "her"s refer to Sandra? Yes. All "they"s refer to the police? Yes indeed.

Redwine (Redwine)

Did Sandra need a reason to call the police? No. Did Sandra want to be searched and found clean? Yes to yesish. I see where you were going, and good idea! But that's not it.

Is there a reason why she couldn't just take it back to work herself? Would apologising to her boss, or whoever was relevant to this, have achieved the same end?

It was alive - did she work at a veterinary hospital?

Did she take a male pet of a desired race, because she had a female pet of the same race at home and she wanted to make profit on babies (puppies, kittens)?

Did she want a reason to go down to the police station? Did she want to steal something from the police station? And that thing was far more valuable than what she stole from work? Is it relevant where she works? Does she work at a bank? Somewhere else with a lot of valuables? Did she know that what she stole was valuable? Or did she try to steal something trivial with some other intent but it wound up being valuable? Like she stole a pen but it turns out the pen was made of gold?

Did she want a reason to go down to the police station? No. Did she want to steal something from the police station? And that thing was far more valuable than what she stole from work? No to rest. Is it relevant where she works? Yes. Does she work at a bank? No. Somewhere else with a lot of valuables? Not typically. Did she know that what she stole was valuable? Yes. Or did she try to steal something trivial with some other intent but it wound up being valuable? No. Like she stole a pen but it turns out the pen was made of gold? No.

Did she steal an animal? A human? A plant
Did she want some human organs, blood etc?
Did she modify whatever (whoever?) she stole?

Would it be helpful to nail down the kind of animal she stole? Or is it unimportant?

Is the animal in question a mammal? A reptile? An amphibian? a bird? A fish? An insect? Some other invertebrate? Would it be unusual to keep this species of animal in a home?

Does Sandra work at a pet shop? In a circus? In some other job with performing animals?

Alexanderhamilton (Alexanderhamilton)

Would it be helpful to nail down the kind of animal she stole? Yes. Or is it unimportant? It's important. Several could work in this situation, but one works best.

Is the animal in question a mammal? A reptile? An amphibian? a bird? This. A fish? An insect? Some other invertebrate? Would it be unusual to keep this species of animal in a home? Yes, though it isn't unheard of.

Does Sandra work at a pet shop? In a circus? In some other job with performing animals? No to all.

Wild stab time: Did Sandra steal an ostrich so she could eat its egg? And then returned it once the deed was done? No, but you are ridiculously close.

She stole a bird, returned it but kept the egg. There's just a bit left to figure out.

Is the bird in question an ostrich? Would it work if we just say it was an ostrich?

Does she plan to hatch the egg? Does she plan to sell the egg? or the resulting bird? Does she plan to eat the egg at a later date?

Did the police not find the egg? Did they find it, but let her keep it? Did they just think it was a chicken egg?

Is the bird in question an ostrich? No. Would it work if we just say it was an ostrich? Not very well.

Does she plan to hatch the egg? Yes. Does she plan to sell the egg? or the resulting bird? Either. Does she plan to eat the egg at a later date? No.

Did the police not find the egg? Noish. Did they find it, but let her keep it? Yes! Did they just think it was a chicken egg? Yes! Because...

I have a dark suspicion here. Are there, by any chance, penguins in this puzzle? Haha, no, but I'd love to hear what the dark suspicion was.

Y'all are definitely close enough, and I have much better puzzles on the way, so:

*******************SPOILER**************
On a whim, Sandra stole a valuable chicken from the farm where she worked (the Ayam Cemani breed can go for $2500 each!). Once she brought it home, though, she realized how difficult it would be to hide or resell a living, squawking animal without being caught. But luckily for her, the chicken found her home quite comfortable and started laying right there--eggs she knew to be fertilized!

Thinking laterally, she called the police on herself and let them take the momma chicken back. She simply put the eggs in an egg carton while they were in her house, and they never suspected a thing.

My cervine friend: My 'dark suspicion' was that this was a new twist on a classic. This is even better!
Can you share a picture of this breed? I'd love to see what a $2500 biddy looks like!

This particular breed is actually all black, right down to the meat.
