Juliet and her colleagues have parties at work. Sometimes they go for months without having a party; sometimes they have two or three parties only a few weeks apart. This isn't random though, so why do they choose such an irregular schedule for their parties?

I'm guessing it's something more lateral than 'birthdays', which fits the puzzle statement.

Does it have anything to do with the dates? Is she an accountant or mathematician or otherwise heavily involved in numbers in her course of work? Is her specific occupation relevant?

Lunar cycles relevant? Astrology? Are the parties themed?

Do they have always the same number of parties each year? Do they know beforehand the dates of all parties in a following year? Is their religion relevant?

Do the parties correspond with actual holidays? With any holidays at all?

Does the office throw a party every time something specific happens? Does the team boss decide when a party will happen at least a day in advance? A week in advance? A month? A year?

The nearest of those is scientific research, but that's still not very close.

Is this an achievement that everyone in the office would have worked on, every time? Or might Juliet be involved in some of the achievements, and not directly in others?

Does the timing of the party depend entirely on how fast they work? Are outside factors relevant? Are they completing some type of job for a customer? Or do they help a third party in any way?

Does the achievement lead to financial gain? A physical product? A discovery? A furthering of research?

NASA involved?

We know that the frequency of parties is dependent on the frequency of professional achievements of the office. Is it also dependent on something else? Do they celebrate all achievements?
Do they design only one certain type of products in that office? Do they sell their designs? Do they work for government? Do they design awareness/promotional campaigns?

Redwine:

Is it also dependent on something else? No

Do they celebrate all achievements? Every achievement of this particular level of achievement, yes.

Do they design only one certain type of products in that office? Their business designs (perhaps 'design' isn't really the best word) many, but this particular office just 'designs' one.

Do they sell their designs? Once the product has been made (by a subcontractor or another part of the business, not sure which and not relevant which), the product is then sold.

Do they work for government? No

Do they design awareness/promotional campaigns? No

You're probably going need to figure out either their profession or what the product is, in order to progress.

Do they design a non-durable or consumer good? Do they design a durable good?

Does it involve food in any way? Does it involve literature in some form?

Does the 'design' aspect of their role focus on the artistic qualities of the final product? It's technological specifications (hardiness, processing speed, firepower, sharpness etc.)? A combination of the two?

Is the nature of the product they design ever-evolving, as with a piece of technology, or is it cyclical and based on the changing tastes of the public?

It's technological specifications (hardiness, processing speed, firepower, sharpness etc.)? ...than this.

Is the nature of the product they design ever-evolving, as with a piece of technology, or is it cyclical and based on the changing tastes of the public? I'd say the first of these two is more accurate, though perhaps a bit of both.

***************Spoiler***************

A ture story: Juliet works at the Oxford University Press, as one of the teams who write the entries for the Oxford Dictionaries. They start from "A" and work through to "Z", rewriting and updating entries as they go, until they're ready for a new edition release.

Each time they finish a "letter", they have a party. So when they're doing "R", "S", "T", they go for a long time without much party action. But when they get to "X", "Y", "Z", they come along rather more frequently.

Nice puzzle!

Funny coincidence - today, I found an Oxford Dictionary from 1974 at a local "give and take" bookshelf, and of course, I gave it a new home. I'll now think of this puzzle everytime I look up a word =)
