Was the criminal activity to do with driving offences, like drunk driving? Were they unable to drive as an essential part of their job?

Um... just to clarify were they sentenced to "a usual" punisment, or "an unusual" punishment? A usual punishment, nothing extraordinary, just like other people in similar situation.

Were they banned from coming within a certain distance of something? Or someone? Banned from possession of something? Banned from using certain kinds of technology?

Were they not able to practice their chosen profession at all? Or were they just unable to perform their current jobs?

Is it relevant that there are two men? Would this puzzle work just as well if only Al committed the crime? Are Al and Brian famous figures? Do they work together?

Were they banned from coming within a certain distance of something? Literally speaking, yes. Or someone? No. Banned from possession of something? No. Banned from using certain kinds of technology? No.

Were they not able to practice their chosen profession at all? Yes. Or were they just unable to perform their current jobs? This too.

Is it relevant that there are two men? Two - no. Men - yes. Would this puzzle work just as well if only Al committed the crime? Yes, but one person is not enough for that crime. Are Al and Brian famous figures? No, at least not yet. Do they work together? Yes.

Was it a white-collar crime? Did it involve fraud or theft? Conspiracy, espionage, or anything similarly cloak-and-dagger?

Were they under house arrest? Community service? Did the judge hand down the sentence knowing they'd be unable to work? Was it an unforeseen consequence?

If the average person were given this sentence, would it also interfere with their ability to work?

Wizardofnz:
Is the specific crime as relevant as the punishment? No, but discovering the crime most probably would help with the punishment.

Was it a white-collar crime? No. Did it involve fraud or theft? No. Conspiracy, espionage, or anything similarly cloak-and-dagger? No.

Alexanderhamilton:
Were they under house arrest? No. Community service? No. Did the judge hand down the sentence knowing they'd be unable to work? The judge should have known it. The judge probably did not think it over. Was it an unforeseen consequence? The judge knew their profession so he really should have foreseen the consequence.

If the average person were given this sentence, would it also interfere with their ability to work? No.

Was the crime they committed related to their work in some fashion? Or their workplace?

Was the punishment generic punishment you might receive for a common crime? Or was it tailored to fit the crime? Was its intention to keep them from performing the crime again? Was it tailored to remedy the crime (i.e. making reparations to the victim)?

Wizardofnz:

Are the upcoming Olympics relevant? Would this sport be found in the Winter Olympics? The Summer Olympics?

If any sportsmen was arrested for this crime, would it have a negative effect on their career?

Would the men be able to play this sport in a nonprofessional setting? Does something about professional play prevent them from working? Or is it inherent in the sport itself that the punishment would prevent them from playing it?

If any sportsmen was arrested for this crime, would it have a negative effect on their career? It would depend on the sport played and the punishment.

Would the men be able to play this sport in a nonprofessional setting? Yes. Does something about professional play prevent them from working? Yes. Or is it inherent in the sport itself that the punishment would prevent them from playing it? No.
You may disagree with my answers to last three questions - they depend on what you call "professional setting".

Do amateur athletes use different equipment than professional athletes? And they were only banned from using the professional equipment? Like maybe they were baseball players and they were banned from possessing anything wooden? But if they were amateur baseball players the bats would be aluminum?

Also, is the sport currently in the Summer Olympics? (Baseball isn't.) Has it ever been? (Baseball has.)

Does the solution have to do with passports, immigration status and competing internationally?

Were they given electronic ankle tags and thus unable to put on shinpads, or otherwise in violation of some rule in soccer?

*************SPOILER**************
Al and Brian, professional football players, were convicted of participating in a soccer riot, and their punishment was that they were banned from entering soccer stadiums for two years.

Thanks for playing and congrats to Wiz and Alexanderhamilton for nailing exact crime and punishment.
