Ben phoned to a complete stranger, Alice. The call was not answered. Soon the police was called and Caleb, stranger to Alice and Ben, was arrested. What's going on?

Was Alice used to strangers calling her? Did she host a show on some media? Was Alice called at home? At her place of work? Elsewhere?

Was Caleb arrested for a crime in connection with Alice? With Ben? Was it murder? Did Alice not answer the phone because she was dead? Was it kidnapping? Did she not answer because she was kidnapped?

Did Ben know Caleb? Did Alice know Caleb?

Was Ben calling Alice specifically?
Or did he call some company or organisation for whom Alice was a representative (Tech support, for example)?
Is the reason for Ben's calling relevant?

Had Caleb stolen her phone?
Is the distance between any of the 3 participants relevant?
Can any of them see each other when the call takes place?
Are any of them within hearing distance of each other?

So, possible scenario:
Alice rummages around in her handbag, her pockets etc. in a public place, looking generally worried.
Ben notices, and asks her if she has a problem. She says she can't find her cell phone. Ben offers to call the cell phone so that she can hear where it is. And the rest is history, as they say.

And now I remember doing a puzzle in 2003/4 about my daughter phoning me from a university payphone, asking me to ring her mobile phone as she couldn't find it in her mess of a bedroom. She could remember our home phone number of course, but didn't know any of her friends' phone numbers without seeing them on her own phone.

***********SPOILER*************
Alice, Ben and Caleb were in the bus. Alice was with a small child in a cart. Caleb moved over so that Alice could sit. Before her station, Alice found out that her cell phone was missing. She nervously searched her belongings but did not find the phone. She started crying and Ben offered his help to call the phone so that Alice could locate it. Alice told him the number and Ben called Alice's cell phone so that she could hear where it was. And the sound came from Caleb's pocket.

It's based on a true story. In the real story, Caleb just handed the phone to Alice. Shocked, Alice and Ben did not call the police and Caleb escaped.

Thanks for playing, especially Abc for solving the puzzle.

Nice Puzzle. One always has some preconceived notions that need to be disposed of in such cases. This time it was B phoning A = B must be a long distance away from A.
