A masked man breaks into a banker's house late one night. Nobody sees him enter, and it is impossible to see into the house from the street.

The man finds the banker, the house's sole occupant, awake. He binds and gags him, and begins helping himself to the banker's property.

Halfway through the exercise, the burglar has a realisation. He leaves the house as quickly as possible, but is met outside by armed police who arrest him immediately.

What had gone wrong?

Did the robber know the banker beforehand? If so, did he realize he knew him at the time of the robbery?

Was the police alerted by: the banker? A witness? The thief? An automated system? Were they already watching the thief before he broke in? At the moment he broke in, was it already too late? Or could he have done something after that in order not to attract the police?

Is the banker's job relevant?

Did the witness know the banker? The robber? Did the witness see video footage of the burglar? Of the tied-up banker? Did the witness hear audio of either?

Is the witness's job relevant? Their gender? Age?

Is a security system involved? Was a trap set for the burglar?

Are there cameras in the banker's house? Microphones? Was the banker under surveillance?

Was the banker on the phone with someone when the house was broken into? Skyping this! or videochatting in some way? yes.

Solved after 10 posts. Bother and lemons to everything, but well done to Konnie for what I believe is your first solve!

***** SPOILER *****

The burglar discovered the banker in his kitchen getting a glass of water. He bound and gagged him after a long struggle, and started looking around for valuable objects. When he discovered the banker's laptop on the dining room table, he noticed that the Skype window was open, and a conversation had recently ended with a message in the vein of 'Calling police now'. The banker had been in the middle of a video chat, and the whole scene had been witnessed, and the police called.

Thank you all for playing. This puzzle went through a number of iterations in my head before I settled on this one (the video conference being the key point from the beginning) but it seems I still didn't pick a twisty enough situation! Well done all, especially Konnie.
