A wealthy man is taking an evening stroll through town when he notices that his ring is no longer glowing. He gasps in horror and realises he must take drastic action to preserve his reputation. Why?

Is the ring the kind you wear on your finger?

By "glowing", do you mean simply very shiny/reflective? or do you mean that it is actually emitting its own light?

Could the puzzle situation have happened to a poor man? Was the man's reputation connected with his wealth? Is man's occupation relevant? Is man's criminal record relevant?

Did the glowing ring indicate somehow the "level" of man's reputation? Did the man's reputation depend on keeping the ring glowing?

Did the man wear the ring? Was the ring visible for other people? In that case, if I were to see the ring, would I immediately know what is it and what it is for?
Is it relevant how the man got his ring?
Was the man a sportsman?

Is the ring the size of a ring you wear on your finger? If not, is the diameter smaller than the diameter of a pizza? of a hula hoop? of the center circle on a basketball court? bigger than that?

Did the man have the ring with him when he realized it was no longer glowing?

Is the material relevant?

Is the man in a video game? Is he a real person (at least for the purposes of this puzzle?) Could/did this really happen?

Does the ring glow to attract attention? To guide someone or something toward it? As an advertisement? A show of wealth? A light source? Is the glowing a byproduct of some other function? Is the ring powered by electricity? Does it stopping glowing indicate some kind of power failure?

Is the ring circular in shape? Does it have walls? Is it just a circle, empty inside? Does its whole surface emit light? Does it emit light only at night?
Is the ring placed vertically? Horizontally? Is it placed on a building? Is it a part of a monument?
Does the ring serve a purpose? Is it only decorative? If it serves a purpose, must it be glowing to serve this purpose?
Does the ring emit also heat when it's glowing?

Without the O, do the letters spell a risqué word? an offensive word?

Is the building a hotel? a restaurant? a casino? a factory? a theatre?

Is the building a hotel? a restaurant? a casino? a factory? a theatre? none of the above. Not truly relevant so

***** SPOILER *****

He is the owner-operator of the town's largest supermarket, Countdown. He sees that, at some point in the evening, the first 'O' on the sign has burned out. He quickly went and turned off the remaining lights, so as not to be seen to let such an offensive sign stand.

Well done Doriana (again), and Redwine et al for all the groundwork.
