Had you committed a crime?
Had you beaten up your daughter's husband of six weeks who had gone off with the bridesmaid who was her brother's girlfriend? Oh wait, that was my sister in law. (The police were actually quite sympathetic!)
Were you studying criminology?
You're a lawyer, right? Was this part of your training?
Were you talking to a client and they forgot to let you out?

Was it that you hadn't done anything illegal, they just thought that you plain deserved it?
Did you do it voluntarily?
Was it part of helping out a client?
Did you take the initiative to do it?
Were you actually in a cell?
Locked into a cell?
Or just somewhere else on the general prison premises?

Is the fact that you are a lawyer relevant at all?

By prison, are we talking about an actual building designed to hold actual prisoners? if so, is it a prison that is still in use? Was it a police station jail designed to hold people overnight?

Were you filming a rap video?

Were you taken to the prison against your will? Were you made to stay there against your will? Could you have left at any time?

Was a relevant third party (friend or family member perhaps) in the cells? Did you have a relevant connection with one of the police officers or other members of staff?

Are any pranks relevant? Was there a misunderstanding?

Did someone ask you to come to the prison? Did you go there without invitation or request, but once you got there, circumstances changed?

Would you have liked to leave at any stage? Had you forgotten something or gotten yourself trapped somehow?

While you were there, were you performing any relevant action? Were you performing a service or doing a favour for a policeman or staff member? Were you free to leave in the morning? Is that, in fact, when you left?

So, you come to a new place, for some reason do not have prearranged any accomodation, which leaves you in a tight spot, then you remember that you have someone at the prison that you can call, and ask them to help you out?

You could do it because you knew someone (who knew someone) who could "get you in"?
And they took the initiative to help out?
Because they heard that you were going to wherever it was that the prison was situated?
Is it relevant why you went there?
It had nothing to do with the prison, right?

Have some posts gone missing here? I thought I posted some more questions here? Well, anyway:

Someone (friends, family?) knew about the possibility of getting prison accommodation?
And brought it to your attention?
And you knew others (friends? family?) who could help you actually get it?
Inmates relevant?
Was someone you knew an inmate there, and you had the excuse of visiting him?
Would it work if we replaced the prison with, say, a bakery?

Did the "someone" who knew about the accommodation a former prisoner? A current prisoner? A current or former employee of the prison?

Is it fair to say that if there was a motel next door that charged the exact same amount as the prison to stay the night, you would have just stayed there? That is, you had no specific interest in staying in the prison/ any prison.

Could you did what you did at any prison (of the same security level, let's say)?

Is there a hotel wing built into the prison? Intended for people who are visiting prisoners but coming from far away? But they let other people stay there too?

Did you deliberately get snowed into the prison? Did you get stuck in the snowstorm while driving near the the prison and have to spend the night there, since it was better than sleeping in your car? (Apparently a college basketball team wound up doing that about 20 years ago.)

****************SPOILER*******************
When me and my brother were children, our parents took us for skiing holiday to Slovakia. It was our first long journey, so parents decided that we should stay somewhere overnight. My mother worked in an armed force that is responsible for prisons in our country. She could arrange us an accomodation in the apartments, that prisons usually have to host some officials. When the apartments are not occupied, they are available for prison armed force members and their close relatives at a cheap price. That was cheapest and quite a comfortable accomodation for us. Parents' friends and their children had to stay in other accomodation, because they were not let into prison.
We used the opportunity to stay in prison appartments on couple of occassions. Also, prison armed force had couple of holiday resorts, where convicts worked (as part of their resocialisation) as waiters, cleaning people etc. These resorts were primarily to host prison armed force's conferences and trainings. The resorts were open for anybody, but again prison armed force members and their close relatives were given huge discounts.
That's how I spent most of our family vacation in prison - related places :-)

Thanks for everybody who contributed to this puzzle :-)
