An internet forum is known for its general friendliness. However, many of its most active participants have frequently been reported for abusiveness by other members. Why should this be so?

Were the active participants being abusive? Contradicting the rules of the forum?

Was any action taken due to the reporting? Were posts deleted? Users banned? Warned?

Are all the members of the forum adult? Human? (I'm thinking as opposed to bots, rather than animals using forums, but you never know...)

Relevant what the forum is about?

Do the users know they have been reported? Did they ask other users to report them?

Do the members report them deliberately? accidentally?

Enjay:

Were the active participants being abusive? no Contradicting the rules of the forum? no

Was any action taken due to the reporting? no disciplinary or punitive action was taken Were posts deleted? no Users banned? no Warned? yesish

Are all the members of the forum adult? yes Human? yes (I'm thinking as opposed to bots, rather than animals using forums, but you never know...) <b>There is one member of the forums who purports to be a cat (or should that be, purr-ports. Some suspect this may be a facade).

Gregoryuconn:

Is it the LTPF? No. As far as I'm aware, there haven't been many reports of abusiveness here. I could be wrong, and they could all just be about me.

Doriana:

Relevant what the forum is about? no

Do the users know they have been reported? yes, eventually Did they ask other users to report them? no

Do the members report them deliberately? no accidentally? yes

Do their posts get flagged for the mods? Is this because of people scrolling on their phones?

Bit confused here. You said upthread that the members report them accidentally - but the posts don't get flagged inadvertently. Do they get flagged deliberately, but people don't realise what they've clicked on?

Bit confused here. You said upthread that the members report them accidentally - but the posts don't get flagged inadvertently. I guess I didn't really understand what you meant by 'flagged for the mods' - reporting members for abusiveness is essentially synonymous with 'flagged for the mods' in this case. Reports of abuse are sent to the mods for review. Do they get flagged deliberately, but people don't realise what they've clicked on? yope

Had the users who reported the others intended to do something else? sending them a private message? quoting their post? looking at their profile? upvote their post?

Another 10-poster.

***** SPOILER *****

This forum has only one (mouse rollover) option for responding to an individual post - 'report abuse'. In this age of Facebook, forum members tend to absent-mindedly click this option to 'upvote' a post they like.

Nice one! In June 2011, I ran a puzzle ("How to be good...") about the dangers of the like button.
