A rule was changed, but for a completely different reason than most people think.

Hi Paul , hope you're enjoying things here in Lateraland.

Is this a sports rule? rules of the road? a school rule?

Was the rule changed recently? Was the rule change newsworthy? Was the move well received in general or was it very emotive?

LOL ABC between us we came up with a pretty good list of rule types. Now what's the betting that none are relevant.

None of the above, but "sports rule" is your closest guess

Peter365 (Peter365)

Is this a sports rule? See above rules of the road? No a school rule? No

Was the rule changed recently? About 30 years ago Was the rule change newsworthy? Not really Was the move well received in general or was it very emotive? Some people are a little annoyed by this change, but it has no effect on most people's lives. It wasn't especially emotive.

Think-reason: to improve the game? Make it more fair? Make cheating harder? Make it last longer? Shorter? Make scoring easier? To make the game simpler? More difficult?
Actual-reason: to improve the game? Make it more fair? Make cheating harder? Make it last longer? Shorter? Make scoring easier? To make the game simpler? More difficult?

Anything to do with the fact that the buzzer is blocked until the host has read out the clue completely? (which was not the case in the German version of the show that aired in the 90s, by the way)

(which was not the case in the German version of the show that aired in the 90s, by the way) No. Not a bad guess though, as that was one of the rule changes at the time; just not the one I had in mind

Interesting Trivia: (nothing to do with this puzzle) -- When Art Fleming was the host of Jeopardy in the 1960s and 70s, contestants could ring in as soon as the category was picked. This was very common when a contestant was comfortable with the category. It did result in a lot of incorrect responses, though.

Wide area guess: I think in the first years the contestants coming in second and third could keep the money they collected. Later only the winner received the actual sum he won, the other two received 1000 dollars each. Is this relevant?

(pretended reason: to make the game more competitive? to give anybody a strong incentive to strive for winning the game?
actual reason: just to save money?)

Yes, that's it! Well done!

(pretended reason: to make the game more competitive? to give anybody a strong incentive to strive for winning the game?

Actually it's the other way around, but you have the right idea

*********SPOILER************
When Art Fleming was the host of Jeopardy, all contestants got to keep the money they won. The producers of the show noticed that often contestants would stop ringing in when they were satisified with the money that they've already won. In addition, they would bet too conservatively on Final Jeopardy to protect their winnings even when a small wager would give them no chance to win the game. That is why the rule was changed (during the Alex Trebek era) so that only the winner kept the money. It is commonly (and mistakenly) believed that it was done to save money.
