I recently made a comment about Jonathan that was not remotely racist. However, heard out of context, it could sound incredibly racist. What did I say?

Are you and Jonathan the same race? If not, is he black? Asian? Native American? Hispanic?

Is Jonathan H/A/M? Is he a friend of yours? fellow student? professor? acquaintance? Is he a famous person?

Brown M&M's relevant? /

Would a person need to know Jonathan's race to think it was racist, if they heard it out of context? Would they be able to assume his race from the comment? Would the assumption be correct?

Would they think it was racist because it made it sound like you hate X people? Think less of X people? Stereotype X people? Are ignorant about X people?

Would someone hearing the comment out of context think you were being racist towards Jonathan, in particular?

Are you and Jonathan the same race? See below. If not, is he black? Asian? Native American? Hispanic?

Is Jonathan H/A/M? I was wondering how quick this would get asked. He is NOT, in fact, human. He is also not an adult of his species, but that's irrelevant. Is he a friend of yours? fellow student? professor? acquaintance? Is he a famous person? No to all.

Brown M&M's relevant? Haha no.

Would a person need to know Jonathan's race to think it was racist, if they heard it out of context? No Would they be able to assume his race from the comment? Yes, see next answer. Would the assumption be correct? No, because he's not human.

Would they think it was racist because it made it sound like you hate X people? Possibly. Think less of X people? Possibly. Stereotype X people? Are ignorant about X people? No to rest.

Would someone hearing the comment out of context think you were being racist towards Jonathan, in particular? Yes

Is Jonathan an ape or a monkey? Is racist ape imagery against blacks relevant? Is he a raccoon?

Are there any relevant racial slurs? Racial stereotypes?

Would the out-of-context observer think Jonathan was black? Asian? Native American? Hispanic? Other?

Is Jonathan a 'fictional' character, in any sense?
Does he 'live' inside your computer? Or in a game?

Is Jonathan a mix of breeds? Does he have black and white colouring? Did you describe him in a way that might be used offensively about a mixed-race person? Did you call him a mutt? A mongrel?

Did you suggest he would be better in some way if he were white?

Did you suggest he would be better in some way if he were white? Pretty much, yeah ....

****SPOILER****

Recently, UConn (my school) unveiled a new live mascot, Jonathan XIV. All the previous Jonathans except the first have been all white, but this one was part black. I complained about how this Jonathan was part black instead of all white like his predecessors. This might have been too easy. Check out my next puzzle!
