Were you using a word(s) in a way familar to you, but that Emily took with the American meaning?

Was it a single word? Phrase? Sentence?

Did you specifically intend to use British English? Or were you just writing in English without considering regional differencies?

Is Emily also a student at the university? Is she also German? Is she British? American?

So, you inadvertently used a few american english words, possibly slang, in a communication with a Scottish-Canadian friend. The exact words are irrelevant.

Is the subject of your writings relevant? Did it concern activities done with friends or events happening on campus?

Did you arrange words different than normally?
Spell them differently? Was it a word like 'color' vs. 'colour'?
Did you switch regional references? Like hoagie vs. sub?

********SPOILER********

The other day, I (not-so-cleverly disguised as Lina in this puzzle) got a letter from Emily, my Scottish-Canadian penpal of four years. In it, she writes,

"By the way, does your university have a large American presence? I'm curious because in the last year or so you're switched to American vocabulary, and you're my only German friend who does so, which makes me wonder if you're around lots of Americans."

I hadn't even noticed I had switched to American vocabulary, and I'm pretty sure I still spell things the British way. However, I think my change in vocabulary is mainly caused by the increasing amount of American media I consume.

Nice work, folks! New puzzle will be up shortly.
