And a last one...

Alice walks into a shop. Bob makes a horrible mistake. This causes Charlie to make another quite embarassing mistake, saving Alice's life. What happened?

This is a lot more sophisticated and not at all based on own experience

Is Bob's mistake a consequence of Alice's shop-walking? Is Alice's life saved in the shop? Time elapsed between Bob's mistake and Charlie's mistake: seconds? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? Decades? Centuries? Millennia? More?
Time elapsed between Charlie's mistake and the saving of Alice: seconds? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? Decades? Centuries? Millennia? More?
Is Alice's life saved from death? From some other bad outcome?

Relevant the three's relationship? Are Alice and Bob familiar Alice and Charlie? Bob and Charlie?

Was Bob aware of his mistake when he made it? Afterward? Was Alice aware of Bob's or Charlie's mistake then or afterward? Was Charlie aware of his own mistake or Bob's?

Is it a clothing shop? Food store? Sports store? Hardware store? Relevant?

Galfisk

Is Bob's mistake a consequence of Alice's shop-walking? irrel, assume no
Is Alice's life saved in the shop?
Alice is still in the shop when Charlie makes the life-saving mistake, but not anymore when the life-saving consequences happen
Time elapsed between Bob's mistake and Charlie's mistake: seconds? Minutes? This Hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? Decades? Centuries? Millennia? More?
Time elapsed between Charlie's mistake and the saving of Alice: seconds? Minutes? This Hours? Or this Days? Weeks? Months? Years? Decades? Centuries? Millennia? More?
Is Alice's life saved from death? This From some other bad outcome?

Paul

Alice: H/A/F?
Bob: H/A/M?
Charlie: H/A/M?

Yes to all (but only H/A is relevant)

Konnie

Relevant the three's relationship? Are Alice and Bob familiar Alice and Charlie? Bob and Charlie?

Bob and Charlie know each other. Assume that they haven't met Alice before

Was Bob aware of his mistake when he made it? Afterward? Was Alice aware of Bob's or Charlie's mistake then or afterward? Was Charlie aware of his own mistake or Bob's?

Bob's mistake:
It is irrelevant whether Alice was aware of it (assume no). Bob and Charlie were aware of it a moment later.

Charlie's mistake:
Alice was aware of it later. Bob and Charlie were certainly aware of it later, but that part is irrelevant

Is it a clothing shop? Food store? Sports store? Hardware store? Relevant? It is relevant what shop it is, but none of these

Was the shop a pharmacy? Is the title relevant? Is the use of Latin in medical prescriptions relevant?

Do Bob and Charlie work at the shop? Just Bob? Just Charlie?

Just to clarify: if, for example, Alice had been given wrong medicine at the pharmacy, and she'd willingly take it, not knowing that it wasn't safe, that wouldn't count as suicide, right?

Did Alice plan her suicide before going to the shop? Did she change her mind because of Charlie's mistake? Would Alice commit (or attempt to commit) suicide if Bob hadn't made his mistake?

Did Bob make his mistake in the process of doing his job? Did he not do something he was supposed to? Do something he wasn't supposed to? Do one thing instead of another? Did his mistake have something to do with the medicine Alice wanted to buy? With the medicine she was given?

Did Charlie make his mistake on purpose, to save Alice's life? Was it embarassing because it would be embarassing for him if someone learned how Charlie gave a customer the wrong medicine? Or because he had to do something embarassing to make that mistake?

So Alice was in fact given the medicine she asked for? Or maybe what she was given was not a medicine at all?

Was Bob in the pharmacy when he made his mistake?

Was there only one relevant visit of the pharmacy by Alice? And that is when both mistakes and the attempted acquisition of poison by Alice occured?

Is the following recap of the situation correct?

Alice plans to commit suicide. To do this, she wants to purchase a certain medicine and use it as poison. She walks into a pharmacy and asks for that medicine. At that moment Bob, an employee of the pharmacy, does something, and because of that Charlie, another employee, gives Alice something that doesn't even look like that medicine, or any medicine at all. Alice doesn't notice this, so when she comes home, she can't poison herself. Then she apparently changes her mind about the suicide and lives happily ever after.

Did Bob say something that caused Charlie to give Alice the not-medicine? Is it relevant what exactly that not-medicine was?

This is correct - but it's not necessary that Bob is an employee of the pharmacy.

Did the not-medicine belong to Charlie? To the pharmacy? Is it something one can usually find in a pharmacy? Something one can usually find in a shop? Did Charlie take it to correct Bob's mistake and then forget about that and give it to Alice, thinking it's medicine?

Bob was in the pharmacy when this all happened, but he wasn't doing his job, right? Was he also buying something? Was he just hanging around? Was he talking to Charlie when he made the mistake? To Alice? Was Bob's mistake something he said? Wrote? Could Bob make that mistake if there were no customers in the pharmacy?

Did Charlie think Alice asked for the not-medicine? Or did he just give her what was in his hands without paying attention to what it actually was?

Was it highly inappropriate because Alice obviously wouldn't ask for the not-medicine? Was it something a woman wouldn't buy?

Also, I'm getting tired of "not-medicine", so:
Does the not-medicine have something to do with health? And improvement thereof? Is it used by most people at some point in their lives? Is there a specific category of people that use it? Is it used by people of a certain gender? A certain age category? Is it edible? Can it be described as a clothing item? Is it used for information storage? Is it usually considered inappropriate for people other than its owner to use it? Is it larger than a coin? A matchbox? An apple? A basketball?

Is the "not medicine" a liquid of some kind that comes in a container? Is it some type of cosmetic? is it normally applied to the human body somehow? or to the body of an animal? is it used for cleaning?

Is it "highly inappropriate" simply because it was unlike what she actually asked for? or did it imply something negative about her, in the sort of way that leaving an un-asked-for stick of deodorant on someone's desk can imply "you stink!"? (I think we've ruled out deodorant though, since it is something one might commonly actually ask for in a pharmacy)

Two people... Were Bob and Charlie using it when Bob made his mistake?

Is this device generally used for work? Entertainment? Something else?

When it is used, is it operated by just one person? Is the second person involved actively participating?

Is it used in the pharmacy? Does it interact with the goods sold there?

When it interacts with people, does it physically touch them? Same question for the objects it interacts with

So is it some kind of a game? Is it just one item? Two items? More than two?

Was Bob the one who was operating it? Was Charlie?

The not-medicine is just one item, but keep in mind that more objects are relevant

So Bob and Charlie were playing a game. A board game? Chess? Checkers? Is the not-medicine a piece from this game? Was Bob's mistake making a bad move and allowing Charlie to capture his piece?

Okay, so Alice walks into the pharmacy, where Bob and Charlie are playing chess. Charlie captures one of Bob's pieces. Alice asks for whatever it was she planned to poison herself with, but instead of that medicine Charlie places in her bag the captured piece he was still holding in his hand. Alice can't commit suicide, and thus her life is saved. Is there anything else relevant about the story?

I think that's all for the puzzle, so it's time for the

====== SPOILER ==================

This puzzle is based on Chess Fever, an old silent film from Russia.
The story goes that there is a master chess tournament in town (the movie uses real footage from the international tournament of Moscow, 1925), and virtually everyone is mad about the game - that is, everyone but the heroine, who is called Alice in this puzzle. Alice has just split with her fiancÚ, because that guy was so obsessed with chess that he forgot his own wedding ceremony. Desperate, she plans to kill herself with an overdose of whatever medicine, and goes to the pharmacy to buy some.
At the pharmacy, the staff (Bob and Charlie) hardly take notice of her, because they are deep inside a tense chess game. At this moment, Bob makes a mistake, losing his Queen.
(Actually, I got that scene wrong - in the film, Bob has his Queen captured too, but it was no mistake since he can answer with checkmating his opponent. My version works better for the puzzle, but is was no intentional mistake)

Now Charlie notices that there is a customer, but being absent-minded because of the game, he wraps up the captured queen instead of the medicine bottle, and hands it over to Alice (who doesn't notice before later). Alice can't poison herself, and because she later decides that she better live on, her life is spared.

The reason Alice changes her mind is, that just after discovering she doesn't have the pills, she meeds the Latin Lover from the title, who is nobody less than the then-reigning World Champion, JosÚ Raul Capablanca, who has a cameo appearance in the film. This man (well-known for real-life womanizing at the time) makes Alice think different of the game, and even visit the tournament, where she is reunited with her fiancÚ, and all is well.

Congrats to Juiferrant, and thanks everyone for playing.
