A man causes the death of a poor but healthy man, many miles away. His widower, who loved him dearly, wrote a sincere letter of thanks to the first man. Why?

Possibly a quite well-known story, so please submit all premature spoliers to my actual e-mail address

I meant his widow, although there's no reason why this puzzle couldn't work with a hypothetical same-sex marriage

Can we call the first man Frank? the second man Sam? and the widow Wendy?

Relevant that Sam is poor? Money relevant at all?

Is Frank's job relevant? Did he make a mistake on his job that cost Sam his life?

Is he a screenwriter for a TV show? Type of show relevant?

If so, did Frank die of something he saw/heard on the show? If so, did he die of laughter? Was he so shocked about something that happened on the show that he dropped dead?

***** SPOILER ***** (shameless copy-paste)

On 24 March 1975, Alex Mitchell, from King's Lynn, England, died laughing while watching the "Kung Fu Kapers" episode of The Goodies, featuring a kilt-clad Scotsman with his bagpipes battling a master of the Lancastrian martial art "Eckythump", who was armed with a black pudding. After 25 minutes of continuous laughter, Mitchell finally slumped on the sofa and died from heart failure. His widow later sent The Goodies a letter thanking them for making Mitchell's final moments of life so pleasant

Well done, Doriana. I expected this to go fairly quickly, but not quite this quickly.

Damn , believe it or not when i read this puzzle statement I wondered if it could be the Goodie's story. I guess I got here too late.

Used to love The Goodies when I was a young lad.

Mea maxima culpa, Peter. Some day, I'll post a puzzle that doesn't get solved in its teens.
