From Crack the Case, this is the longest puzzle I've ever written.

Tara and her roomate Victor spend the vening with Tara's brother Ned. The next morning after the tragedy, Tara tells police, "Victor and I heard shouting in the library. We walked in and saw a masked man shoot my brother, then run out the French doors. Victor chased after him, but couldn't catch him."
The maid confirms the last part. "I ran in and saw Ned on the floor covered in blood. Victor was running out the doors, chasing the burglar I assume."

The detectives eventually arrest the real murderer, but the gun is never found. And someone who helped cover up the crime is never arrested.

I'm really enjoying these Crack the Case puzzles!

Was Ned actually dead? If so, was he shot? By a masked man? A burglar?

Was the murderer Tara? Victor? The maid? Someone else?

Was the person who helped cover it up Tara? Victor? Ned himself? The maid? The detective? Someone else?

Is it relevant what Tara, Victor and Ned were doing together that evening? Did the crime occur that evening? Before they had all gone to bed? After?

Is it relevant why Tara killed her brother? Why Victor helped cover it up?

Did the crime happen in Tara and Victor's house? Ned's house?

Did Victor run out of the doors to give the impression that he was chasing someone, to draw attention away from the real murderer? Was the murder premeditated? Did Victor know about it in advance?

Was there a discrepancy in Tara's story that tipped the detectives off? A lack of agreement between her story and Victor's? Was the maid in on the murder?

Was Ned shot with a gun? If so, did Tara dispose of it? Hide it? Destroy it? Disguise it as something else? Did Victor do any of the above? Somebody else?

Did the detectives ever realise that Victor helped cover up the crime? Did they suspect him but have no proof? Did he turn Tara in?

Was Victor in love with Tara? Did she offer him a reward if he helped her cover up the crime? Threaten him if he did not? Was Tara trying to frame Victor for the crime?

Did Victor also give a story to the police? If so, did he tell them the same as Tara did?

Did Tara shot at her brother from the entrance door to the library? From the French door? Was the shooting direction different that it would have been, had there really been a masked man?

Were Victor's motives to help Tara entirely altruistic? or did he have an own interest, too?
Did Victor want that someone else is convicted instead of Tara? someone specific?
Was Victor's intention in the first place that the gun is not found? Was someone else killed with the same gun before? (if so: did Victor expect the fact that two different people in two different places were killed with the same gun would make the police think of a serial killer, rather than searching among the relativs and friends of the victim?)
Was it Victor's gun? Did Victor expect bad consequences for himself (beyond being tried for covering up a crime), if the gun ever gets into the hands of the police?
Did Victor know that Tara plans to kill Ned? Was Victor present when she fired at Ned?

Did Victor track dirt back into the house? Probably, but they could have assumed this was from chasing the 'burglar'. Here's a hint: They found suspicious substance on Tara, but couldn't put the pieces together until they found it on Victor.

SPOLIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*************************************************************************************
Desperate for more money, and number one in her brother's will, Tara shot and killed Ned in his library. In the weeks before, she had trained her dog Victor to take a fake gun from her bury it.

While investigating, detectives found gunshot residue on Tara. They couldn't figure out how she'd done it, but suspected her involvement. Finally, the maid remembered that Victor had mud on his front paws. They put the pieces together, and tested around his snout, finding more GSR.

Good work everyone! And now we'll all remember the importance of the basics. HAM? HAF? :-)
