ROIMBT??

Has he bet on sports matches before? Other betting? Relevant?
Is he a sportsman? Is he betting on himself, or anyone he knows? Is he spreading his bets? Does he make a loss overall or a gain? Can he afford to lose? Does he get addicted? Does he tend to make money or lose it, overall? Do others know he does this?

Knowledge of betting required for this puzzle?
So, does he have the skill to be able to break even? Or is he just lucky? Or is there something else going on here?
Self improvement: the skill to gamble? His maths? A skill he learns/improves because money is a motivator? Relevant how much money he bets? 'Betting extensively' = lots of bets, lots on money, or both?

Are we talking about modern times? Was him asked to bet on sport matches? I mean...it was not a matter of gains right? Relevant which sport matches? Like horse races? Dog races? ...I'm thinking of an england gentleman going to Ascott to improve his "social lifestyle" and meet new aristocrats. So in order not to appear "poor" or as a social use and costume, he began to bet...something along those lines?

If the above is OTWT, did he begin to bet on football matches? Rugby matches? American football? Polo? Others? Don't know if it is possible (I think for sure is not legal) but...did he play those matches as well? Did he bet on more matches per time? If so did he bet on matches of the same sport? Did he watch them on television? Did he go to the place where at least one of the matches was played?

Self-improvent and discipline = social status? Afford something? Meet someone relevant?
Did he mostly bet for/against teams? For/against animals? For/against single man/women? Did he bet on the one that he think would be the winner? On the one who for him would be the loser? On the teams/man/animals playing agains his favorite team/man...? (Those latter would be good exercises of discipline at least...)

Did he bet on matches that are played in specific moments/periods? Matches that are played while he is doing something relevant? Did he bet to be "emotionally involved" in the match?

Is he betting microbets? Is he playing poker? Some other non-sport game? Has he got a free dollop of money from the casino in return for subscribing with them? Is he betting - I don't know what it's called, but that thing where you take advantage of differences in betting rates and you bet to win and to lose, and whichever it is you still make a few pennies, and if you do it enough you make a fair amount? Does he already have some skills in whatever he's betting on, e.g. he can play poker already? Or is it pure chance? Does he study form?

Does he watch matches while: doing housework? Exercising? Practicing something? Does he want to be emotionally involved in order to: get a higher heart rate? Experience certain emotions? Practice control over certain emotions? Or behaviors?

Is the behavior apparent when: exercising? Watching sports? Winning? Losing? Is he a sore loser? Is winning and losing relevant?

Are the games in which he bet played simultaneously? Is he doing an exercise which requires concentration? Precision? Focus? Do the advantages of doing this come mainly when matches are lost fron the team? Is anger one behavior he needed to face?

Is the speaker/commentator voice relevant? I mean...when I watch such matches I'm more involved the better is the speaker commenting them...also placing bets on them will make me much more involved!

Do we need to establish how he's exercising? Does he do this at home? at a gym? Weights? Treadmill ? Rowing machines? Did he take up betting at the same time as he took up exercising? Did someone advise him to do either? Has he any relevant medical complaints or is he just trying to get fit?

Does he need to lose weight?

Time for a silly guess 'has he misunderstood the phrase 'beating the spread'?

Do we need to establish how he's exercising? yes Does he do this at home? at a gym? yes Weights? Treadmill ? Rowing machines? more relevantly the cardio equipment Did he take up betting at the same time as he took up exercising? yes Did someone advise him to do either? irrelevant, assume no Has he any relevant medical complaints or is he just trying to get fit? the latter

Does he need to lose weight? not necessarily

Time for a silly guess 'has he misunderstood the phrase 'beating the spread'? Beautiful in its lateralness, but sadly incorrect

Do the bets relevantly motivate him to exercise? To go to the gym? Does he bet on sports he only can watch at the gym?

Do the bets relevantly motivate him to exercise? yes To go to the gym? no Does he bet on sports he only can watch at the gym? yes

I think we're done.

***** SPOILER *****

He was a regular gym-goer, but often found it hard to get motivated when exercising. He found that his efforts and outputs would increase the longer he spent on the equipment, however. To incentivise staying on them, he began placing small bets on the sports matches being broadcast at the gym. This provided him with enough of a distraction that he could remain on the machines until he found his rhythm.

He tended to place small or safe bets, so he did not lose much if any money on this endeavour - but his results at the gym improved markedly.

Congratulations, GalFisk, on the solution, and thank you everyone for playing!
