[Solong] A Geolateral puzzle

Postby Solong » Sun Jul 06, 2014 4:54 pm

Based on a recent puzzle by Admin.
The easternmost and westernmost points in this country are 65 miles apart.

What country is it?

Hmm. Alaska straddles the 180 meridian, so it is close to both very-east and very-west.

************SPOILER*****************
The country is the USA. It's westernmost point is the Alaskan Aleutian Island of Amatignak. But part of the Aleutians lie on the other side of the 180th meridian and are therefore in the Eastern hemisphere. The easternmost point is the island of Semispochnoi, which is 65 miles west of Amatignak!

And I would have bet that it's New Zealand. I somehow believed to remember that the date line was moved east around New Zealand in order to avoid that different parts of the country have different dates.
Actually, also Russia stretches beyond the 180 meridian, but for Russia the distance is larger than 65 miles.
