Is Matt H/A/M? Alive? Is Bill related to him? Is Bill in a position to know whether Matt will ever after be seen wearing a hat?
Hat = accessory worn on head?
Will Matt ever be seen again at all? By those Bill is speaking to?

So the listeners can infer that from tomorrow on Matt will always be wearing a hat ? Or is it just when he's in their presence?

Are we talking about a metaphorical hat as in 'I'm wearing my compliance hat today'

By the way Paul I had a problem with my e-mail send function so you might think I was being rude in not responding to your mail. Of course I'd be delighted to continue to help out with moderating the board. If you want to go ahead and set me up I'll check it out

Does Matt change his job?
if so: is the hat he is going to wear related to his new job?
(i.e. would he not start wearing a hat if he would not change his job?)
Is the job change something he decided himself?
Is he being promoted?
Is he elected into his new position?
Will he be working for the government? Is he currently?
As you mention entertainment: Is Matt going to be a circus clown?
Is he a theatre actor? and going to play a role that requires a hat?
Is Matt a professional sportsman?

Is the hat part of Matt's sports gear?
Does it protect him? Keep his head warm? Identifies him in any way? Gives him a better performance in the sport (like a swimmer's cap)? Does he wear the hat mainly for tradition?
Did he do the same sport already before starting to wear a hat? if so: without a hat?
So, is it possible to do this sport with or without a hat?
Does the hat identify particular participants in this sport? if so: umpires?

Is the hat a sign of a promotion or an upgrade (various words possilbe)? I'm thinking like ... in cricket, if you play for your state or your country, you get to wear a distinctive hat. Or in baseball, if you move up a league, you get to wear a batter's helmet. That sort of thing.

* * * * SPOILER * * * *

Sunshine

Does Matt turn professional? Does the hat promote a sponsor?
Yes

Matt Fitzpatrick competed as an amateur golfer at the US Open and played very well. On the final day he was the only player not wearing a sun visor. He was due to become a professional after this tournament. All professional golfers wear sun visors because of the high advertising value of the sponsor's name. The commentator remarked that today would be the last time that you would see him not wearing a hat.
