Do you mean the country singer?
Did you have a personal reason to not like him? Did you feel offended by him?
Did your hatred have something to do with one of his songs? More than one?
Was your hatred of him related to his appearance? His status as a performer? A specific thing he said? Or sang? Or sang about?
Was your hatred based on a false assumption about him? Or because you incorrectly interpreted something he said or did? Or because you assumed he believed something that he actually didn't?
Did you begin to hate him as soon as you saw him? As soon as you heard his voice?
Or only after you learned about who he was?

Is his name relevant? Relevant that his initials are GH (or GHI, if you count the Roman numeral)? Is some form of trivia game involved?

Is the Abilene paradox relevant? No Or a specific place named Abilene? Only insofar as it's given rise to a song called that .

Time for a little hint, I had a very OCD reason for resenting the song Abilene and by that virtue George Hamilton IV , even though I quite like the tune. In truth my resentment or dislike was never serious and was more of a quirky thing.

Do you consider the spelling incorrect in some way? Do the letters break some kind of sequence (e.g. were it not for the 'e's, the letters would be alphabetised?)

Do you consider the spelling incorrect in some way? No Do the letters break some kind of sequence (e.g. were it not for the 'e's, the letters would be alphabetised?) This is actually quite hard to answer, there's an element of a sequence being disturbed but it's not the end to end order of the letters in the word. Having said that , the alphabet is relevant. Maybe follow this line of thought and things will become clearer.

This is very much along the right lines but it's not a catalogue. Consider the word Abilene and think about its position on a list.

Relevant that it is spelled with capital A?

(I'm unsure about the proper pronunciation, so please forgive if the next question sounds silly) : Is it relevant that "i" follows the "b", because one will mostly try to look it up somewhere around "able" than somewhere around "abide"?

It's got nothing to do with the difficulty in spelling it or looking it up. Simply consider where Abilene would appear in a list of things that were arranged in aphabetical order.

Does it play when you don't want it to?

Why I think of this: I have "Kansas City" as played by the Beatles on my phone, and it's a compilation track and is titled thus: "1) Kansas City 2) Hey hey hey". For this reason, it always plays first (automatically for some reason) in my car when I plug my phone into the charging cable that also plays music. Thus I've come to resent hearing "Kansas City" all the time when I normally wouldn't mind it.

To move things along ask yourself this question. Why does it annoy me that Abilene is now the first song listed on my iPod music library?

I was going to guess Twilightseeker's scenario – that happens to me all the time too. Fortunately my first song alphabetically is "Aaron Burr, Sir," from Hamilton, which I don't mind hearing the opening beats to before I hit pause and pick the song I actually want to hear.
TS – it must happen because it reads that song as first in alphabetical order. Not sure why; usually Apple lists songs beginning with numbers last alphabetically.

Is the opening of the song particularly relevant? Is it in front of another song you like more?

Is the opening of the song particularly relevant? Nothing about the song apart from the fact that it now appears first on my music list is relevant Is it in front of another song you like more? Yes the song it replaced as first on the list is very relevant but it's not to do with how I rate them. It's much more pedantic than that.

Apropos of nothing I'm a big fan of post punk british rock bands from the late 70s early 80s.

Is it anything to do with just SEEING it there all the time? Do other people see it there and want you to play it more? Do you end up listening to it more and therefore are getting sick of it? Is it related to something "automated" about your phone or mp3 player (or whatever you use to play the song)? Do you accidentally end up playing it?

Does the song on top play first? Do you want to start your listening with the old top song? Did the new order mess up a routine or habit?
The first stereo in our old car couldn't shuffle and always started with the same song on the memory card, which everyone ended up hating though it was actually quite good.

Does the song on top play first? Do you want to start your listening with the old top song? Did the new order mess up a routine or habit? No to these , the desire to hear one song over the other is not relevant. It's a kind of aesthetics thing, although that doesn't describe it perfectly either
The first stereo in our old car couldn't shuffle and always started with the same song on the memory card, which everyone ended up hating though it was actually quite good. I imagine most songs would become quite irritating after so many plays.

Excellent leap there Balin, and you've 90% of the solution . Just for fun can you guess the song, it's begins with another Ab word and as i've said I'm quite a fan of the early 80s british post punk bands.

WiZ

Absolute Beginner by The Jam? Bingo

******************SPOILER*******************

That's a wrap folks, my daughter was messing about with my iPod recently and exclaimed suddenly 'Wow that's sooooo cool , the first track alphabetically on your list of songs is called Absolute Beginners'.

I agreed that this was a pretty cool coincidence and then proceeded to ruin it by burning an old country CD that i got free in a newspaper onto my iPod . Abilene is now the first song listed which is very much less cool. Cue my feelings of resentment to Mr Hamilton IV , these feelings were shortlived as I realised that there's a slim possibility that there are more important things in life.

Thanks for playing folks and to WiZ for finishing it off. I'm going underground until I can think of another puzzle.

Hadn't heard "Absolute Beginners" before. Just gave it a listen – pretty good.

And it's nowhere near the best song the Jam had. In my humble opinion that title belongs to Eton Rifles
