[Balin] AV Maria

Postby Balin » Fri Sep 09, 2016 3:12 am

Out of all the guests at Maria's wedding, Brock buys her the cheapest one, yet she appreciates his gift the most. Why?
Maria = H/A/F
Brock = H/A/M
All pronouns in the puzzle statement refer to Maria (female pronouns) or Brock (male pronouns)

cheapest one = cheapest gift?
Is Brock not very rich? Is his gift technology related?
Perhaps he is the only guest at Maria's wedding?
Did Maria appreciate it the most because - she liked it the most? it was the gift she most needed? wanted? It was a very personal gift? Did it allude to something that she and Brock had shared previously? A special meaning only known to the two of them? Brock had sacrificed the most to obtain it?
Relationship between Maria and Brock - family? friends? ex-lovers? current lovers? colleagues? Is Brock the groom?? Is the gift the ring??
Did something go wrong at the wedding, and Brock's gift saves the day? Eg. Maria's dress tears, and Brock has very conveniently got her a sewing kit?

Some great WAGs here =D

Was the soft toy new? Had Brock just bought it for Maria's wedding?
Did either one of them own this toy when they were younger? If so, Maria? Brock? Did either one of them own a similar-looking toy when they were younger? Maria? Brock?

Had Maria lost the toy previously, and Brock tried to help her find it? Is that how they became friends? And now Brock has finally found it? Or purchased one that looks a lot like it?

Was a toy like this involved in friendship day at all? Did they become friends because theyhad something specific in common? Are they the same age? Relevant? Their age(s) on friendship day relevant?

So the soft toy is relevant before friendship day... before they knew each other? Was is it relevant to both of them before Friendship Day? Just one of them?
Is the soft toy supposed to represent one of them? Brock, perhaps? Has either of them ever likened the other to the soft toy? Was it a soft toy animal? human? vehicle? alien? monster?

But but but... didn't you say my puzzle timeline of "Soft toy is relevant --> Friendship Day --> wedding?" was correct, even though the soft toy wasn't relevant in them becoming friends?

The specific animal is relevant, so here goes:
dog? wolf? cat? tiger? rabbit? owl? bear? fox? bird? fish? pig? frog? some big cat? penguin? koala? wombat? octopus?
Does it run on four legs? Two? Does it live on land?

Say the animal is a cat, would any cat soft toy do? Or does it have to be this specific one?

Were they classmates? Did they take a particular relevant class together? Did the soft toy have anything to do with their schoolwork? An assignment?
Were they actually neighbours? Or just lived close by? Friendship Day didn't happen at school; did it happen in the neighbourhood? In one of their houses? Near one of their houses?

But but but... didn't you say my puzzle timeline of "Soft toy is relevant --> Friendship Day --> wedding?" was correct, even though the soft toy wasn't relevant in them becoming friends? I suppose that's an error on my part; I apologize. Some timeline clarification: on Friendship Day, the animal in question was relevant, but not the toy itself. It was the animal that led directly to their friendship. The wedding came years later.

The specific animal is relevant, so here goes:
dog? wolf? cat? tiger? rabbit? owl? bear? fox? bird? This fish? pig? frog? some big cat? penguin? koala? wombat? octopus?
Does it run on four legs? Two? This Does it live on land? Um... it's a wading bird, so however you classify that.

Say the animal is a cat, would any cat soft toy do? This (although it is not a cat) Or does it have to be this specific one?

Were they classmates? Yes Did they take a particular relevant class together? No Did the soft toy have anything to do with their schoolwork? No An assignment? No
Were they actually neighbours? Or just lived close by? This
Friendship Day didn't happen at school; did it happen in the neighbourhood? Possibly; probably not In one of their houses? No Near one of their houses? Possibly; probably not

Did she mistake the flamingo with another, existing animal? Or did she simply think that it is a furry animal - one that however doesn't exist in reality? Did she think the flamingo was a species of dog? cat? another domestic animal? a wild one? All irrel. All you need to know is that she thought a flamingo was a type of animal that had fur.

At the moment of her wedding, did she still think that a flamingo was an animal with fur? Did the toy help her get rid of this idea?

So, does the gift serve simply as an inside joke (i.e., "Remember when you thought flamingos had fur?")? or is it more than that?

So the gift was special because it was a furry flamingo, referencing when she used to believe a flamingo was an animal with fur? Anything else to find out?

So the gift was special because it was a furry flamingo, referencing when she used to believe a flamingo was an animal with fur? Yes Anything else to find out? Yes: the situation where Maria revealed she thought flamingos had fur.

Was in a conversation about animals? Were there any animals present at the time? Any pictures of animals present? Anything involving feathers or fur in general? Toys? Was Maria speaking with Brock at the time she revealed she thought flamingos had fur?

Was someone trying to guess the word "flamingo"? by asking yes/no questions a la LTPF? If so, did someone ask "is your word something with fur" and she answered "Yes"?

It sounds like a game of 20 questions. Are there any other relevant circumstances?

It sounds like a game of 20 questions. That'll do it. Are there any other relevant circumstances? No; that was the last little bit.

****SPOILER****

While carpooling home from school one day, Brock's mother started a game of 20 Questions. On Maria's turn, she picked an animal, and answered "Yes" to "Does it have fur?" When neither Brock nor his mother could guess it, she revealed it was a flamingo, to which Brock and his mother corrected her. They all thought it was hilarious, and Maria and Brock became close friends from that point on. So when Maria got married, Brock got her a stuffed flamingo – in other words, a flamingo that was actually furry.

The "furry pink flamingo" incident is actually true; I'm "Brock" in the story. My old school friend Bethany is "Maria." However, the wedding scenario is not true (I don't think she's married); that I added for the puzzle statement.

Oh, and the title: the clue was the capital letters. A-V-M = Animal-Vegetable-Mineral.

Nicely done everyone – Biograd for a large chunk of the solution, WiZ for the last bit, everyone else for everything else.
