[Balin] Look down, look down, don't look 'em in the eye

Postby Balin » Fri Sep 09, 2016 3:15 am

Detective Dexter took one look at the murder scene and realized the police should have arrested Jimmy instead of Edward. Why?
Everyone mentioned in the statement = H/A/M

Look down, look down, you're here until you die. Did Detective Dexter look someone in the eye? Did he look down? At the murder scene? At the corpse, perhaps? Was the corpse present? Was Jimmy present? Was Edward?

The murder victim (who was not mentioned in the statement!) = HAM?

Was Jimmy left-handed and Edward right? ;)

Any of these relevant: their appearance? Occupation? Age? Names? Where they lived?

Murder method: Stabbing? Shooting? Strangling? Poisoning? Electrocution? Drowning? Burning? Freezing? Crushed?

Was Edward arrested on suspicion of the murder? As an accomplice? In a different case?
Should Jimmy be arrested on suspicion of the murder? As an accomplice? In a different case?
Was Edward the *victim*? Jimmy?

Are the shape/color/nature of Edward's or Jimmy's eye(s) relevant? Their faces? Limbs? Torso? Hair? Height/weight? Skin? Another physical feature?

Now bring me Prisoner 24601, your time is up and your parole's begun. You know what that means!

Is anybody blind in this puzzle?

Did Detective Dexter make a note of the gun entry wound in the victim's body? Does something about it make him suspect Jimmy? Was the victim shot multiple times? Just once? Where was the victim shot - head? neck? shoulder? arm? chest? stomach? back? groin? buttocks? thigh? calf? foot?
Did DD think it was impossible for Edward to have committed the murder? Or just unlikely?

Did the victim write down Jimmy's name before he died? No Hint to his name in some other way? No To his appearance? Yes

Did Dexter look the corpse in the eyes? No

Are the shape/color/nature of Edward's or Jimmy's eye(s) relevant? Their faces? Limbs? Torso? Hair? Height/weight? This, for Jimmy Skin? Another physical feature?

Now bring me Prisoner 24601, your time is up and your parole's begun. You know what that means! Yes, it means I'm free!

Is anybody blind in this puzzle? No

Did Detective Dexter make a note of the gun entry wound in the victim's body? Not at first glance Does something about it make him suspect Jimmy? It would further confirm his initial (correct) impression
Was the victim shot multiple times? Just once? This
Where was the victim shot - head? neck? shoulder? arm? chest? stomach? back? This groin? buttocks? thigh? calf? foot?
Did DD think it was impossible for Edward to have committed the murder? Or just unlikely? Um... I'll say that when he saw the scene he was certain that Jimmy had committed the murder.

I'm starting to think this is going to go a lot quicker than I'd anticipated...

WAG: Was Jimmy really tall? Was the victim shot in the back from an angle ABOVE, so the shorter Edward couldn't have shot him?

Are Jimmy and Edward the only two suspects for the murder?
Does what Dexter saw prove that Edward is innocent? or that Jimmy is the murderer?
Relevant the place where the murder scene is? outdoor? indoor?
Something on the victim relevant? like clothes or an object?
Is the corpse found where the victim was shot?

Are Jimmy and Edward the only two suspects for the murder? Yes
Does what Dexter saw prove that Edward is innocent? or that Jimmy is the murderer? It highly suggests that Jimmy is the murderer
Relevant the place where the murder scene is? outdoor? indoor? Most likely this (could be outdoor, works better indoor, so let's say indoor)
Something on the victim relevant? No like clothes or an object?
Is the corpse found where the victim was shot? Yes

Was it only the corpse that made DD suspect Jimmy? Or something else at the murder scene too?
You say the victim hinted at the murderer's appearance - was it deliberate? Does this refer to the entry/exit wound? Or something else?
Was the corpse lying down? Kneeling? Sitting? Crouching? Was the corpse looking down?
Is Jimmy a midget?

Did the victim know Jimmy or Edward personally? relevant? is murder motive at all relevant?

Was the victim lying face down on the floor? was he presumably standing or sitting when he was shot? relevant?

Was there a substance also found at the scene that lead to DD's conclusion? blood? did the victim write or draw something in blood before dying? Was there a different substance relevant: gunpowder, dirt?

Did he write, "I have just been shot by an unknown midget, not by Edward" in blood? That's a little long to write! But no (though as said above, he did write something in blood)

Did the victim try to write "dwarf", but passed out before the last letter, and then Jimmy added an E at the beginning?

Wow, that's really clever! Wish I'd thought of that instead of making silly jokes.

Was there something about the added "E" that alerted DD to the fact that it had been tampered with? Was the "E" in a fainter colour than the "Dwar"? In different writing? Was the 'd' in 'dwar' capitalised? Did Jimmy add the "d" at the end or did he leave it as "Edwar"?

Does the blood say - Edwar? Edward? edward? edwar? EDwar? EDward? eDwar? eDward?

Wow, that's really clever! Wish I'd thought of that instead of making silly jokes. Thanks! And there's never a reason to apologize for silly jokes...

Was there something about the added "E" that alerted DD to the fact that it had been tampered with? Yes Was the "E" in a fainter colour than the "Dwar"? No In different writing? No Was the 'd' in 'dwar' capitalised? Yes! Did Jimmy add the "d" at the end or did he leave it as "Edwar"? No

Does the blood say - Edwar? Edward? edward? edwar? EDwar? This, which wraps it all up nicely. EDward? eDwar? eDward?

****SPoile****... I mean ****SPOILER****

Jimmy, a dwarf, shot the victim in the back. Before he died, the victim wrote "Dwar" on the floor in his own blood, intending to write "Dwarf," but died before he could finish the word. Jimmy added an "E" to the beginning of the word so it said "EDwar." Seeing the writing, the police arrested Edward, but Dexter noticed the capital D and realized the writing had been tampered with to frame him, and realized it must be the dwarf, Jimmy.
(Further examination of the body, namely the angle of the bullet wound, later confirmed Dexter's logic. Then again, this isn't a real story, so nothing actually happened.)

This was inspired by the cover of The Black Lizard Big Book of Locked Room Mysteries, which features similar writing.
https://www.amazon.com/Lizard-Locked-Room-Mysteries-Vintage-Original/dp/0307743969

And there were a couple hints that the puzzle involved a dwarf. The title was one, as most people would have to look down in order to look a dwarf in the eye, but Jimmy's name was another: the dwarf character in In Bruges is named Jimmy.

Well done LemonCurry for the major leap, Jackie for the final piece of evidence, and everyone else for making quick work for Dexter.
