[IrishElk] Awakenings

Postby irishelk » Sat Sep 10, 2016 8:04 pm

His new sofa set brought Landon peace, even though he doesn't care about furniture or shopping, and there was nothing wrong with his old sofa set.

Was it making the purchase that brought him peace? That it was a sofa set? Is any one part of the sofa set relevant?
Would any other purchase have brought him peace?

Balin

Was it making the purchase that brought him peace? No. That it was a sofa set? No. Is any one part of the sofa set relevant? No.
Would any other purchase have brought him peace? A few other items might have worked.

Zanreo

Anything hidden in the sofa, maybe? No.

Twilightseeker

Did he give his old sofa set to someone? No. Anyone else relevant involved here? Yes.

GalFisk

Differences between the old and new set relevant? Generally, yes. Specifically, no. Relevant what happened to the old one? No. Any animals involved? No.
Did he buy the new one in order to gain peace? Yes. Peace and quiet? Peace of mind? This is closest. End of conflict? End of war? Silence? Also this, in a sense. End of physical activity? Rest? End of worry? Comfort? No to rest.

Was the old sofa connected with something in his mind? Had something relevant happened to it? On it? Did it remind him of something relevant? If the new sofa looked exactly the same as the old, would it still bring peace of mind? Does Landon suffer from an irrational fear? Relevant how he got the old sofa in the first place?
WAG time:
Did a huge scary spider (or other animal) disappear into the old sofa, and he has no idea if it's still lurking somewhere?
Did he and a friend or partner spend good times on the old sofa, but the friend or partner left, disappeared or died, and now all the memories are sad?
Did something unpleasant happen between him and someone else, or between other people, on this sofa? Was his partner unfaithful with someone else on it?

****************RECAP because I have a Halloween puzzle to post. =)

Landon has had some unpleasant encounters with other people, and replacing his sofa will help him avoid such unpleasantness in the future. The issues with other people did not directly involve the old sofa, and he has no problems or sad memories associated with the old one.

The physical properties of the new sofa are not relevant, nor is the buying process. However, it is important that the new sofa look different than the old one.

Landon's job is very relevant.

Is the sofa in a waiting room? Does Landon work in an office where clients wait for him in such a room? Do they have (perhaps nervous) habits that are disturbing? That are curbed by the new office furniture?

"All the OCD people coming to see me keep moving the furniture, making them nervous and us annoyed. Let's nail the chairs to the floor."

"The blood donors keep bleeding on the couches, let's buy stain resistant ones."

"Homeless people keep sleeping on the benches outside, let's get more uncomfortable ones."
(Actual government-issue tactic)

Anything like the above?

I wouldn't say habits, but they are doing something that's unpleasant to Landon. That are curbed by the new office furniture? Indirectly.

As someone who likes to sit outside and read, I hate those uncomfortable benches with a fiery passion. Also when they put little knobs on handrails to stop skateboarders grinding on them...or people from using them as handrails...

If a offending patient had left and Landon looked into the waiting room, would he still be annoyed? or in other words, does whatever the patients do that bothers Landon linger after they are gone?

Could what is done to offend L also be done in his office proper? anywhere else? or is it confined to the waiting room?

If a patient walked in and immediately went to the office instead of lingering in the waiting room would he or she still have time to do the offense?

Is crime relevant?

Is it relevant whether the patient is female or male? does L deal only with adults? kids? if both, do they equally do the offensive thing?

Are toys relevant?

So did the new sofa have a domino effect that extended to more rooms than just the waiting room?

Offense = does it involve standing still? movement of arms? legs? hands? feet? shoulders? mouth? tongue?

Were there any patients who did not engage in the offense?

Does the offense entail doing just one thing? or is it a series of actions/things?

If Landon had just told them to stop doing what they were offending him with, would they be likely to comply? or would they just ignore him? be ticked off at L?

Hmmm...was the offense almost or entirely unavoidable for the patients to do before the new sofa was put in?

So did the new sofa have a domino effect that extended to more rooms than just the waiting room? Sort of, but remember the old sofa was not directly related to the behavior.

Did they ask him the same question(s) over and over again during their visit? did Landon ever answer the offending question(s)? did he ever express his annoyance to them?

Is the question(s) they asked Landon rather general? or very specific?

So, they ask him when he is going to retire, and he takes this as a personal affront as if they are questioning his ability to do his job simply because he is old, right?

So, what's left is to figure out how buying the new sofa set dwindled or halted such questions?

Does getting brand new furniture for the waiting room show that he's not planning to close the office just yet? Yes!

Well done Grip & Galfisk!

*******************************SPOILER

This is a true story from one of the Freakonomics books, in which a private-practice doctor found a novel solution to a tricky problem. Because he happened to be around 80 years old, his patients were constantly asking him if he was about ready to retire, when he planned on retiring, etc. "Landon" was perfectly healthy, as sharp as ever, loved his practice, and didn't ever plan on retiring--but it seemed rude, not to mention repetitive, to keep reminding them of this.

Instead, he bought some new office furniture for the waiting room. This effectively sent the message that he wasn't planning to close his office any time soon.
