[WiZ] How nice to add a title in retrospect

Postby WiZ » Sun Sep 11, 2016 10:39 pm

Gemma is planning a trip to Europe. She is a bright, pleasant individual, but she predicts that she will encounter a lot of awkwardness in one country in particular. Which one, and why?

Caveat earlispoilor. Please do not invoke the LTPF list of European countries.

Which one: The UK
Why: It's an awkward country...that's just the way it is here. :D

Which one: The UK
Why: It's an awkward country...that's just the way it is here. :D Hey, now. As a New Zealander, I relate very strongly to the British brand of awkwardness. I even say 'oop' any time I find myself in an awkward situation. The more locally entrenched might say 'bugger' instead.

Anyway, no, it wasn't the UK.

Is Gemma's name relevant?
Is the language spoken in that country involved? Any of her hobbies? Any of her physical characteristics?

Is the letter Gamma relevant?
Are there many people called Gemma in that country? If yes, it is a common first name? Or title? Something else?

Gemma sounds Italian to me. Is Italy the country, by any chance?

If she wouldn't be so bright and pleasant, would she predict that she'll encounter the same awkwardness? Did she actually make the trip? If so, did her predictions prove accurate?

Gemma - H? A? F? Is her age relevant? Her profession? The reason for making the trip? Where she comes from?

Wiz, don't you know the proper pronunciation of the word is "ooooops" or "oooopsie," the way we Yanks say it.;-).
Anyway, awkward question: Is religion involved?

Does her name mean something other than just "gem" in the other language? no

LemonCurry

Is the letter Gamma relevant? no
Are there many people called Gemma in that country? no (certainly fewer than in her home country) If yes, it is a common first name? Or title? Something else? no to these

Peter

Oh I think I have this. PM Sent You are correct, and thank you for respecting the caveat

rcb

Gemma sounds Italian to me. Is Italy the country, by any chance? no

If she wouldn't be so bright and pleasant, would she predict that she'll encounter the same awkwardness? yes (in addition to causing other faux pas due to her personality change) Did she actually make the trip? If so, did her predictions prove accurate? irrelevant - assume yes

Gemma - H? A? F? yes Is her age relevant? Her profession? The reason for making the trip? Where she comes from? no to all of these - for the sake of "painting a word picture", assume she's a 22-year-old student from London on a package tour with her friends

Solong

Wiz, don't you know the proper pronunciation of the word is "ooooops" or "oooopsie," the way we Yanks say it.;-). Interesting. Is this a pan-American thing? I can hear it in a broad Midwestern, Minnesotan, or New English accent, but I can't seem to make it work in Mid-Atlantic.
Anyway, awkward question: Is religion involved? no

Does she share a name with some well-known person in this country? Does this name have some kind of implication in this particular country?

Is it the pronunciation of her name in the host country's language relevant? Is her family name relevant (assuming Gemma is her first name)? Relevant whom she travels with, if any?

Just occurred to me that the first syllable of "Gemma" could sound like "j'aime" in French. Is this part of it?

Just occurred to me that the first syllable of "Gemma" could sound like "j'aime" in French. Is this part of it? You are correct insofar as 'Gemma' sounds like something (or part of something) in French. But 'J'aime' does not factor into it

Three years of high school French and I only remember "un peu"...

Three years of high school French and I only remember "un peu"... This will suffice
Does Gemma have a common last name? Not 'Smith' levels of commonality, but you are likely to have heard of it
Is Gemma a real person? A well-known person? irrelevant

Is it "Gemma Pell"?

"Comment tu t'appelles?"
"Gemma Pell"
"Oui, tu t'appelles... quoi?"
"Je m'appelle Gemma Pell..."
"Oui j'ecoute, tu t'appelles....."
"Gemma Pell..."

I just realised you meant "third base" (baseball), and not "the third goal" (football/"soccer"). Should have known!! Hope we all enjoyed the little song anyway!

Had to look that one up. My three years of French did not include baseball terminology, nor Abbott and Costello routines.

It is!

***** SPOILER *****

Gemma's full name is 'Gemma Pell'. She predicts some awkward encounters when introducing herself in France. See above for an illustration.
