[WiZ] Desaparecerá telarañas

Postby WiZ » Mon Sep 19, 2016 10:11 pm

Title is Spanish for 'Feck off cobwebs'

In a city in Mexico dwell two cantankerous old men who refuse to give each other the time of day. They are causing much consternation for many people worldwide. Why?

Do they LITERALLY not give each other the time of day? If so, are time zones, airports, or train stations relevant?

The old men: actual living individuals? Or rather statues? Other things?

Does this happen in modern times? Are they politicians? Is this a true story? If not - it is conceivable that the two men were located in Spain? the UK? Russia?

Does this happen in modern times? yes Are they politicians? no Is this a true story? Yes (Well, an urban legend putting a spin on a true story) If not - it is conceivable that the two men were located in Spain? the UK? Russia? Yes, this could work in any of these places with the same underlying logic

"Refuse to give each other the time of day" = refuse to speak to each other? refuse to interact politely? refuse to get along? refuse to cooperate? refuse to agree? refuse to collaborate with each other on some activity or action?

"Refuse to give each other the time of day" = refuse to speak to each other? this, most relevantly refuse to interact politely? refuse to get along? refuse to cooperate? this also plays a role refuse to agree? refuse to collaborate with each other on some activity or action? as does this, as above

Good question.

Is it their lack of cooperation that causes problems for others, then? Is it a problem related to the economy/money/financial things? Is it a moral or ethical problem? A social one? Does it prevent some sort of progress (in the broadest sense of that word) from being made? If the two men DID simply speak to each other, would this solve anything? Or is it something more specific that they need to do?

Is the problem related to language itself? Do these men speak the same language? Is the language they speak in danger of dying out? (Asking this question as a linguistics grad student in the language documentation track...so I may only be thinking of this because of that!)

***** SPOILER *****

The two men are the last remaining speakers of an indigenous language. Linguists around the world are keen to capture and study this language before it dies out, but the two men are making things difficult by never speaking to each other!

Well done, Twilightseeker, and indeed Balin, for reaching the solution. I will need to exercise caution when doing linguistics-based puzzles in future, it seems...

Oh wow, dang. I am very surprised that was right! This just happens to be my field though! Endangered language conservation and documentation. Wow. How funny.

Great puzzle! :D
