[GalFisk] In defense of...

Postby GalFisk » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:27 am

They may be where they are out of coincidence, or possibly in order to help, but they annoy me almost every day.

Can these inanimate objects be moved, or are they permanently fixed in place? Are they in your way? Are they too large to move? Too heavy? Too awkward? Illegal to move? Are they all the same kind of object? Is their color or shape relevant?

Tank traps or posts of the sort that can block a road or stop you driving through a certain area? Thus preventing you from taking a shortcut?

Or are they buildings? Signs? Speed bumps or cattle grids?

Do they channel movement? Are they a safety measure?

Must you pass them daily, or otherwise interact? Do they interfere with something you must do? Get to work? Return home? Are they annoying at specific times of day? Are they annoying to others besides yourself? If you changed your schedule, would they remain annoying?

Are they gates? Bridges? In a particular part of your town? (Near a school? Police station? Fire station? Hospital?) Speeds or routes involved?

Must you pass them daily, or otherwise interact? I pass them almost daily. Do they interfere with something you must do? Not "must", but want to. Get to work? Return home? I pass them when I do these. Are they annoying at specific times of day? They would be annoying if I passed them at any time. Are they annoying to others besides yourself? Only to some. Explore. If you changed your schedule, would they remain annoying? Yes.

Are they gates? Bridges? No. In a particular part of your town? Yesish. (Near a school? Police station? Fire station? Hospital?) No to all, but OTRT. Speeds or routes involved? No.

Do they obstruct your view of something else?
Would they be as annoying to visitors as they are to residents?
Do they symbolize something that you do not agree with?
Is there some kind of error/mistake/flaw that you cannot "unsee"?

Do they obstruct your view of:
-something nice to look at?
-something conveying information?
-a storefront or address?

Do you have to pass it to be annoyed?
Do you have to pass it in/from a certain direction to be annoyed?

Are they manmade?

Is the blocking:
-a bus/train timetable?
-a sign or advertisement?
-something with a phone number/website/address/email address?

Poorly worded question ahead:
Are they blocking something that is related to themselves? (i.e. a bus timetable being blocked by a banner for the bus)

Is there a "fence" involved?

Do they block your view of other traffic/road-users? Yope, explore.

Would this still be an annoyance/inconvenience if 'they' were moved 3 inches to the right? A foot? A yard? DOYD of "right", but from the most used perspective, a yard could possibly make it only a few percent less annoying.

Is there a "fence" involved? Yes indeed.

Is the "they" in the puzzle referring to fences?

Do they block the view of something within the streets/sidewalk rather than on the road?
Are there any relevant construction or renovation projects?
Are they meant to hide something?
Are they meant to protect something?

Do they block the view of something within the streets/sidewalk rather than on the road? No, but something not on the road.

Are these wooden fences along the side of the road, parallel with the road?

Would you like to be able to see through them, but you can't?

Is your annoyance caused because you are inquisitive about what is on the other side, and your view is blocked? or just because you think it would be a pretty view and instead you're stuck looking at wooden fences?

Are these like those six-foot-or-so-high fences they sometimes put up at the side of motorways and bridges that are either (a) to block road noise for neighbouring houses, or (b) to provide an extra layer of protection should you skid off the road and crash into them, to save you shooting across whatever is behind them, or (c) to keep hoodlums out so they can't wander onto the road and get run over, or (d) to stop people being able to jump off and commit suicide, or (e) to block your view deliberately so you're not encouraged to drive along looking at the view instead of the road. (I've never actually worked out which of those three is the case for any given road-side fence!).

Are they made of slats? with gaps in between?
Do they cause a strobing effect? Or give you a headache if you look at them?

Would you be equally annoyed if they were solid panels of opaque wood that you could see nothing past?

Good questions. The fence has horizontal planks that almost exactly block the plates on most cars.
But why do I want to see those?

***SPOILER***
Swedish license plates have three letters and three numbers. The goal of the game is to see every number from 001 to 999.
I've been playing it on and off for years, and I'm currently looking for 042. If not for these low parking lot fences being that exact height, the bike ride to the train station each morning would be a good opportunity for playing the game.

That's a good one. Coincidentally, several years ago I did this same thing. My wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) had a license plate with three P's in a row and three numbers. I kept a notebook with me and wrote down the numbers on every other plate I saw with the same letters. She thought this was funny, and I think I found about 200 of the 999 plates.
