Did she meet the friend? Did they have dinner? Did she expect or intend to get icecream when she first left? Did she buy the ice cream? Make it? Steal it? Get it as a gift? Find it? Save it from melting? Type of ice cream relevant? Amount? Type of packaging?

Did she ever meet her friend? If so, did her friend also come home with ice cream?

As a side note, I had a teacher in elementary school who used "rubber band" almost like some people use the idea of a "fuse" to describe their temper. Like, if he was getting really annoyed he would say "My rubber band is getting really stretched right now". I imagine if Linda had an "oversized rubber band" then she wouldn't be too upset she didn't have dinner... especially if it meant she had ice cream.

I've never heard "rubber band" used in that context before. Interesting.

Was it an ice cream cone or similar, designed to be consumed in a single sitting, often on-site or nearby? Was it a tub of ice cream or similar, designed to be stored in a freezer and shared and/or consumed over multiple sittings, typically at one's own home or a premises other than that of the purchase?

Is the place she bought it relevant? When she buys the ice-cream, is she happy? Sad? Angry? Annoyed? Disappointed?

Did the dinner meet-up go well? As expected? Did she learn something in the course of the dinner/conversation that revealed a change in circumstances? That prompted the ice-cream buy? Is the location of the meet-up relevant? If so: at her friend's place? At home? A restaurant?

Did her buying the ice cream serve an ulterior purpose (to having an ice-cream to eat)? Could she have achieved the same end (or, could the events of the puzzle theoretically have unfolded according to a similar logic) by buying chocolate instead? Beef jerky? Some non-food product?

Was it a tub of ice cream or similar, designed to be stored in a freezer and shared and/or consumed over multiple sittings, typically at one's own home or a premises other than that of the purchase? Could be either. Assume it was a small tub.

Is the place she bought it relevant? No When she buys the ice-cream, is she happy? Sad? Angry? Annoyed? Disappointed? I'll say she feels bad about something.

Did the dinner meet-up go well? Yes As expected? Yes Did she learn something in the course of the dinner/conversation that revealed a change in circumstances? No That prompted the ice-cream buy? No Is the location of the meet-up relevant? Only that... If so: at her friend's place? At home? ...it was not at home. A restaurant?

Did her buying the ice cream serve an ulterior purpose (to having an ice-cream to eat)? Yes, svv of "ulterior purpose" Could she have achieved the same end (or, could the events of the puzzle theoretically have unfolded according to a similar logic) by buying chocolate instead? Sure Beef jerky? Not as effectively Some non-food product? Depends on the product, but probably not as effectively

So Linda left her house to meet a friend for dinner? And left her husband at home alone? With kids? With pets?
Was her husband at home at the time when Linda left? Or did he arrive at home after she was gone? Is this relevant?
And at the time when Linda left home, she was not planning to stop and get ice cream before returning home?
Did Linda's husband contact her while she was having dinner with her friend? Before that point? After?
Did Linda's friend do or say anything before, during or after dinner that prompted Linda to buy the ice cream?
Did Linda proceed to buy ice cream immediately after the dinner? Or did she do something else before that?
Did Linda have a realization of some kind that prompted her to buy the ice cream?

Did she gain new knowledge about her husband after leaving for dinner? If so: from her friend? From her husband? From seeing something? Thinking about something? If she'd known about the circumstances that led her to buy ice cream before she left, would she have cancelled the dinner instead?

"An article of clothing? She sees her husband, who is dressed" - This made me laugh

When she saw her clothed, exasperated husband before leaving for the restaurant, did they have an argument? Did she know anything else about the reason for his exasperation (before leaving)? Did he mention a certain food? Was he exasperated at her? About something that had happened to him? At work? With his friends? His family? Did he have a food allergy?

Did she do something (to him) that had made him exasperated? Did she not realize why exactly it had made him feel that way? Did she KNOW at all that she had done something?

So, it was the type of food that made her realize why her husband was exasperated at her? Was it a particular dish that she ate? A particular ingredient? A vegetable, fruit, grain, meat, fish, spice, herb, seasoning, dairy product, egg? A way in which something was cooked/prepared?

So, type of meat she ate is relevant? was it poultry? chicken? duck? beef? lamb? veal? fish? seafood? pork? rabbit? venison? a wild game? other type of meat?

Did her husband's exasperation have anything to do with meat in the first place? or was her realization more roundabout/abstract? any kind of wordplay/puns/language confusion going on?

Did she enjoy the meat? If she had not eaten it, but had seen someone else eat it, would she have made her realisation? Is the taste of it relevant?

So, type of meat she ate is relevant? was it poultry? chicken? duck? beef? lamb? veal? fish? seafood? pork? rabbit? venison? a wild game? other type of meat? Not what I meant by "type of meat"; I suppose I should say "how the meat was prepared" is relevant. The type of meat was probably pork.

Did her husband's exasperation have anything to do with meat in the first place? No or was her realization more roundabout/abstract? It wasn't too abstract any kind of wordplay/puns/language confusion going on? No

Did she order the dish herself? Yes Was it ordered for her by her dinner companion? No Relevant? No
Did she enjoy the meat? Presumably If she had not eaten it, but had seen someone else eat it, would she have made her realisation? Possibly Is the taste of it relevant? No

Did her sausages have links? Had she stood on the garden hose? Drove onto it with her car? Did something else that stopped the flow of the water from the hose?

So her car was on the garden hose, correct? Was her husband using it at the time? Was water running from it? Did the car obstruct the flow of the water? Was she aware that this was what was happening? Did her husband say anything about the hose to her as she was leaving?
Did she damage the hose?
Did she spear the sausages with her fork? Cut them up? Bite them?

Now I'm hungry...

Was she sprayed in the face with sausage juice? Was the husband sprayed in the face with water from the hose?

So, when Linda left in her car se saw her husband in the garden with a hose, wondering why it wouldn't work?
And when she was sprayed from the sausage she realized that her car was on the hose and her husband would have got a big slash of water in his face after she had driven away?

And when she was sprayed from the sausage she realized that her car was on the hose and her husband would have got a big slash of water in his face after she had driven away? Basically. There are a few details off, but I think I can call this a

****SPOILER****

When Linda left for dinner, her husband had told her he was going to water the garden. As she drove away, she saw him looking down the end of the hose with a puzzled look, then getting a jet of water directly in the face. She thought this was funny and didn't think anything of it.

At dinner, she had sausages. When she cut into the sausage and the juice squirted out, she realized that her car must have been parked on the hose, which is why her husband looked puzzled, and her driving away directly caused the water to spray into his face. So she bought him ice cream on the way home as an apology.

Nicely done everyone.
