[Solong] Does JenBurdoo have a copyright...

Postby Solong » Thu Sep 29, 2016 9:22 pm

....on folksong puzzles? Because I am borrowing the idea.

A couple (HAM and HAF) go to a nice restaurant and have a great meal.
Afterwards, however, there is a HUMONGOUS fuss.
How come?

A fuss between the HAM and HAF? Between people at the restaurant? Any others besides these people involved? Does the "fuss" imply an argument? a problem? a physical fight? a disagreement? chaos? Is it relevant what they ate? Is the fuss because of something that happened at the restaurant?

Was there a problem with something else they were given at the restaurant? Had they got a bit of a dirty fork? Or spoon? Do they have ties to the restaurant apart from eating there?

Were they capable of paying for their meal?

Did the fuss involve our two protagonist customers? Other customers? Staff? Other people? Regulations or policies relevant? A language barrier?

Is the particular dish they ordered relevant? Was it seafood (since you mentioned the restaurant had this)? A specific type of seafood? Something else? Did the man and woman order the same dish? Different dishes? Were their orders particularly expensive?

Did both of them actually eat? Did only one of them eat?

Did both of them try to pay for the meal? One of them?

Did something illegal happen? Was it the fact that the meal wasn't paid for? Something else?

Did the one who tried to pay not have enough money? Was their money rejected? Were they physically unable to pay for a different reason (other than having no money)? Was the man who tried to pay or the woman who tried to pay?

Did the one who tried to pay not have enough money? This is correct. Was their money rejected? Yes, because insufficient. Were they physically unable to pay for a different reason (other than having no money)? No. Was the man who tried to pay Yes. or the woman who tried to pay?

I saw an article recently about a waiter who told a patron that a bottle of wine was "thirty-seven fifty." The customer assumed it was $37.50 and ordered it, when it turned out it was $3750. Anything like this?

Did the man go into the restaurant with the intention of not being able to pay?
Did the man go into the restaurant knowing he would not having enough money?
Was he robbed over the course of their meal?

Did the man go into the restaurant knowing he would not having enough money?
Was he robbed over the course of their meal? No to all. Maybe he was over-optimistic about his ability to pay, but he intended to.

Is the cause of the fuss the inability to pay? Does he attempt to pay in some other way? To get someone else to pay? To get money? To leave?

He intended to pay, but did not have enough money to pay. There is a reason for this. What is it?

Did he have the wrong currency? Improper currency? Did he try to pay in US dollars? He had US currency, which was OK, since they were in the US. Let me rephrase: He lacked sufficient currency to pay the bill. Why?

Almost there! Don't give up now!

Is the form of payment relevant? Cash? Check? Credit or debit card? Did he do something like mistake different values of currencies for one another (such as mistake a 10 for a 100 bill or something)? Did he accidentally order something more expensive than he thought? Did he think the restaurant accepted a certain form of payment that they did not? It so, was this due to something indicted in/on the restaurant or its advertisements that misled him?

No.Did he accidentally order something more expensive than he thought? Not quite, but very much OTRT. Explore. Did he think the restaurant accepted a certain form of payment that they did not? Did the woman (his dining partner) order something that he didn't know was a certain price? Did SHE know it was of a certain price? Did she order more than she said she would? More than he expected? A particularly expensive dish/item? Did she say something originally that made him think he would have enough money? Did she say she would pay for some/all of their/her/his food?

More than he expected? A definite yes to this!A particularly expensive dish/item? Did she say something originally that made him think he would have enough money? Did she say she would pay for some/all of their/her/his food?Noish or n.r. to all of these.

*********************SPOILER****************************
The song "I had but 50 cents" was written by Sam Devere in 1895, when the average wage was $1/hr, and you could buy a decent meal for 50 cents. Lyrics:

If you could see the girl I took to a fancy ball
You could span around her tiny waist so neat and very small.
I thought about two oysters sure would fill her up complete.
Such a dainty delicate little thing, but this is what she eat:
A dozen raw, with a plate of slaw, and a fancy Boston roast,
A big beef stew, with crackers too, and a soft crab on toast.
Then she tried some oysters fried. Her appetite was immense.
When she yelled for pie, I thought I'd, for I had but 50 cents.
After putting all this away, she smiled so very sweet.
Said she wasn't hungry a bit, she wished that she could eat.
For a little girl, you bet she had a terrible tank.
She said she wasn't thirsty, but this is what she drank:
A brandy, a gin, and a big hot rum, and a schooner of lager beer,
Three whiskey skins and a couple of gins did quickly disappear,
With a bottle of ale and a gin cocktail she astonished all the gents.
I fell on the floor when she called for more, for I had but 50 cents.
To finish it up this delicate gal cleaned out an ice cream can.
She said, "Sam, I'll tell Mama you're such a real nice man."
She said she'd bring her sisters along next time she went for fun.
I showed the man my 50 cents, and this is what he done:
He broke my nose, he tore my clothes, he shook me out of breath.
I took the prize of two black eyes, he crushed me half to death.
Gave me no chance, but made me dance, and fired me over the fence.
Take my advice, don't try that twice, if you have but 50 cents.

Cheers!
