Did she think the athlete was two different people? Is there something about the athlete's name that sounds like its more than one person ? perhaps Ann sounded like And?

I remember a guy once telling a story about how his girlfriend thought that while Andrew Flintoff was a pretty good cricketer he wasn't as good as his brother Freddie. Anything like this?

Was the lady's thought process.. 'If she wins that gold medal I'll name the baby after her' ? Or is it more a forfeit for some bet? Is the father of the children relevant at all? (Sorry if that's been asked). Does he have a say in naming the babies?

Can the lady not decide which of the twins should get the name?

Did the mother decide how to pick a name before the birth? during the birth? Some time after? Are other people relevant? Did she make promises to anyone? Relevant where the birth took place? How it went? Who, if anyone, assisted her?

Summary so far.

A woman named both her twin girls the same name, which was the name of a female athlete who won an Olympic event on the day they were born. The mother had made no promise and knew that it would cause trouble later. She did not want to give her girls this name or the same name. Why did she do it? This is a true(ish) story which happened within the last 40 years.

Ooh, I was thinking about this one the other day but never quite got round to posting on it. I'll join in then.

If a different female athlete had won the event, would the twins have been named after that different athlete instead? Or still named after the same athlete? Or not named after either?

In addition to causing trouble later, would it also give her a benefit? or give her twins a benefit?

Did the twins and the athlete have the same surname as well as the same first name?

Did she expect someone to confuse the twins with the athlete?

Did the athlete know that twins had been named after her?

Was her decision affected by something she saw on TV news? Read in a newspaper?

Was that 'something' just the fact that the athlete had won the hurdles event?
Or was there other information? about the athlete? about the event? about the name? about naming babies? about something else entirely?

So the athlete in question in Deon Hemmings? Do we need to know anything else about her? Is the other relevant person's name relevant? Is the someone else also called Deon? Or is it something they said or did that's important?

Is the other person a TV presenter? another sportsperson ? With the Atlanta connection I just want to rule out Deion Sanders being relevant?

Was she somehow compelled to give both children the same name? If she had had triplets/quads/quints/sextuplets/septuplets/octuplets/nonuplets/decuplets/triskaidekuplets, would they all be named after this same athlete?

Did the news article contain some sort of mandate to name girls after the successful athlete? To honour her?

* * * SPOILER * * *

The Moroccan athlete Nawal El Moutawakel won the inaugural women's 400 metres hurdles event at the 1984 Summer Olympics. She was the first Moroccan, first Muslim woman from Africa and first woman from a Muslim country to win an Olympic gold medal. Her victory was a breakthrough for women and Muslims. King Hassan II of Morocco was so pleased that he declared that all girls born the day of her victory were to be named in her honour. In 2007 she became Minister of Sport in the Moroccan government.

Great news unless you had twin girls on the day of her win.
