Is the chainsaw regular-sized? Smaller? An actual chainsaw? A replica?
Did Bob intentionally attack Alice? If so, was it premeditated or spur-of-the-moment? Did he recognize her?
Did he view her as a threat?

Did Bob attack Alice with the intention of hurting/killing her?

Did he know it was Alice he was attacking?

Costumes / roleplay / Halloween relevant? Does being "attacked" mean that her costume/guise is convincing?

Is Bob planning to use Alice (the tree) for decoration? Does it imply that she is beautiful in some way if Bob is cutting her down?

Is this based on a fairy tale/myth/legend of some kind? Is this a "children's story"?

Are Bob and Alice two separate trees standing side by side?
Or are they in some way intertwined?

Do both Bob and Alice expect Bob to finish cutting Alice down?
Is Bob able to finish cutting her down?

When Alice realises that Bob is cutting her down, does she:
- believe that Bob finds her attractive?
- change her view of how she must appear?
- know what will happen to her after she is cut down?

If Charlie, a cartoon human, walked up to the pair of them, took the chainsaw off Bob, and started cutting down Alice, would Alice still say "Thank you for the compliment"?

Would Alice still say "Thank you for the compliment" if Bob and Alice were two animated talking cartoon rocks and Bob was chopping Alice with a pickaxe?

Does Bob cut her in order to find her age? Is this the tree equivalent of being asked to verify your age by showing ID? Would only young-looking trees be cut? Does she look young? Is she young? Does Bob think she is?

I was hoping it was hilarious in foresight which is why I put it in last time too, as I suspected I'd got it, but didn't want to over-spoil too early in case ;-)

By the way, clams actually _do_ have rings on them, that you can use to tell their age (at least from what I can tell by googling them: http://sciencenordic.com/new-record-wor ... -years-old) - hence their strange addition to my list of things :-) And palm trees definitely don't have them (http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions ... -trees-age)

Anyway, others have got to the same point I did, and seems that's not quite the answer after all, so Game On...

----------------------------

Did Alice believe that by Bob cutting into her, it would reveal her number of rings?

...and that would lead to an indication of her age?

...and that she believed that Bob knowing her age would be a compliment? or someone other than Bob knowing her age would be a compliment?
because she was:
- young?
- old?
- younger than Bob would have expected
- older than Bob would have expected?
- younger than a tree would usually be when it was chopped down?
- older than a tree would usually be when it was chopped down?

SPOILER

This is from a cartoon I came across on Facebook. The author is Ralph Ruthe, I think he is only known in the German speaking world.

Alice and Bob are trees. Bob has cut Alice down with a chainsaw, then looks at her rings and says "Oh, you are looking at least a hundred years younger!"

Congratulations to bot of you who had the idea with the rings. Feel free to make up the same cartoon with clams :)
