[WiZ] Take your canvas bags

Postby WiZ » Wed Oct 05, 2016 3:34 am

Nerdy Neddy prefers to do his grocery shopping through the self-checkout, as he is always afraid of being judged by a checkout operator. One day, however, the machine delivers the biggest insult of all. What happened?

Very silly. Probable quickie.

Would he be judged by what he purchases? How much he spends? What he looks like? Does he bring a canvas bag to do his shopping? Relevant?

Did the machine make a recommendation for something else to buy?
Did it tell him he was buying too much of something?
Was the product a food? Cosmetic? Toiletry? Pet supplies?

Was the insult on the Display? On the receipt?
Did the insult refer to Neddy's Looks? Age? Health? Social Life? Relationship status?
Was a particular shopping item relevant? Multiple shopping items?

Relevant what he buys? Would a human judge him because of what he buys? Is his fear justified? Was the machine insult similar to the feared human insult?
Edit: does the machine attract attention from humans? If so: customers? Employees?

Was the insult on the Display? On the receipt? neither, most relevantly - although it did appear on the display, too
Did the insult refer to Neddy's Looks? indirectly Age? Health? Social Life? Relationship status? these two, more directly
Was a particular shopping item relevant? yes Multiple shopping items? no

GalFisk

Relevant what he buys? yes Would a human judge him because of what he buys? There would be good potential for that, yes Is his fear justified? irrelevant Was the machine insult similar to the feared human insult? yes (although by accident)
Edit: does the machine attract attention from humans? no If so: customers? Employees?

The weight?

Does the machine fail to recognize that he put the condoms in the bag? Because the box is so lightweight?
Suggesting that he was only buying a few? Or small ones?

Did the machine reject the condoms because the bag would get too heavy with the other groceries?
Did it say something like "your package is too small"?

Did the machine reject the condoms because the bag would get too heavy with the other groceries? yesish - along these lines
Did it say something like "your package is too small"? no, but this is a great answer. The solution does hinge on a double entendre, though

Did the machine ask Neddy to start a new bag with the condoms? Warn him not to put the condom box at the bottom of the bag?

Did the machine use the word "overweight"? "heavy"? Did it sound like it was referring to Neddy himself as too heavy?
Did the machine ask Neddy a question? To question whether Neddy would consider not buying the condoms? To question if they were really necessary? Is the machine programmed to limit customers to one bag? For environmental reasons?
"Do you really need this item?"

"Do you really need this item?" not this - but you're quite warm on the unfortunate implication here

Something like, "Unexpected item in the bagging area"? "Unnecessary item in bagging area"? "Extra item"? "Excess item"? Something along these lines?

Something like, "Unexpected item in the bagging area"? Something exactly like that!

***** SPOILER *****

Perhaps due to nervousness, Neddy swipes a box of condoms across the scanner a little too quickly, and the item does not register. But the weight in the bagging area does. Quoth the machine,

"Unexpected item in the bagging area!"

Congratulations, JumpingJacks, on the solution, and thank you everyone for playing. It seems the default messages are the same across the anglosphere - I was told this story by an American, I recognised the message as it's what Australasian machines say, and this puzzle was solved verbatim by a Briton.
