Did he have dinner because he needed to use the item later? Is it relevant that he ate dinner and didn't do something else? Did he see something on the product when he turned it over? Instructions?

Was the product considered technology? Was it food? Was it something invented in the last 100 years?

Did he understand the instructions correctly? Would most people act the same way when using the product?
Would it have affected the product's effect had used it right away? His enjoyment of it?

Did he decide, after reading the instructions, that he'd have a better opportunity to use the product later that night?
Is there a misprint or mistake on the instructions?

Is this a personal care product? Grooming?
Would this cost less than $50? Less than $20?

Did he heat dinner in order to pass time? Become full? No longer be hungry? Change his body in a relevant way? Could he have gone for a walk instead of eating dinner? Could he have eaten a sandwich?

Was the product used for external medicine (like crutches, an ace bandage, bandaids, a topical ointment, a sling for his arm....something applied to the outside of the body)? Could I buy one (in live in the US) at a local pharmacy? Is it something that a certain demographic of people are more likely to use (young people, older people, people with a certain condition...)?

Would using the product affect his ability to eat or enjoy dinner in some way? His sense of taste? Smell?
Would it affect his ability to prepare his food?

Does he use the product immediately after dinner? Or does he do something else in between dinner and using the product?
Does he eat dinner by himself? Relevant?
Does the product have a relevant side-effect?
Is he ill? If so, is it a temporary illness? Or does he have an ongoing condition?

Does he feel he'd have to use the product again after dinner, so he decides to wait and only use it once?
Does he put the ointment on his joints? Jaw? Stomach?
Does he have dentures?
Does he not want to get ointment on his hands before eating?

Is hand-washing relevant? Is the man eating with his hands? Can we assume he is going to apply the liniment with his hands?

Is the smell of the ointment relevant? The taste? Its resistance to something? Is it water resistant? Does it taste foul? Smell foul? Smell good? Smell strongly? Will putting it on before affect his cooking? His enjoyment of the food?

Does he not want to relieve his pain before eating, for some reason?

Does he read that the liniment is toxic, and doesn't want to risk contaminating his food with it?

Do the instructions say where to use it? Where not to? How to use it? How not to? Does it say something relevant about its effects? Side effects? Any warnings relevant?

Is the false assumption above that he is cooking the food? Or that he plans to enjoy the food?

Would he wash his hands with water that would then be used in the food preparation? Or that would be drunken with dinner?

Is the relevant instruction to wash one's hands after application?

Would he also wash his hands BEFORE applying it? Was the warning "Don't use this if..."? "Don't use this before..."

Would he also wash his hands BEFORE applying it? Was the warning "Don't use this if..."? "Don't use this before..." The warning was "Avoid getting on hands; if you do, immediately wash with water." The other relevant instruction is still undiscovered.

Does the other instruction contradict this one? Does it say what to do? What not to do? Does it precede the handwashing one? Follow it?

Does he have pain in his hands?

Other relevant instruction:
Does it say/imply that he should rub the liniment in with his hands? That he should use gloves when applying it? That the liniment should not come into contact with water? That he needs to have dry hands when applying it? That he needs to leave it in for x amount of time? That he needs to wash the affected area before applying?

Is he confused by the instructions? Does he postpone his application of it because he is not sure what to do? Or just that he does not wish to eat with liniment on his hands?

Does he have pain in his hands?

Other relevant instruction:
Does it say/imply that he should rub the liniment in with his hands? This.

This is part of it; I'll explain the rest in the

****SPOILER****

Our hero is having muscle pain and buys liniment from a drugstore with the intent to apply it right away. Before doing so, he reads the instructions, which first say, "After applying, massage in with hands," then say, "Avoid getting on hands; wash hands if this happens." Noticing the contradictory instructions, he goes to a restaurant for dinner so he can be somewhere with a bathroom where he can wash off the liniment.

These are actual instructions I saw on the box for a roll-on tube of IcyHot. I ended up buying the patch instead just to avoid that contradiction.

Well-solved.

See this is why every manufacturing company needs a copy-editor.

Or they need to supply plastic gloves with the tube.
