[WiZ] Get better work stories

Postby WiZ » Tue Oct 25, 2016 8:29 pm

This morning, I received a tip-off from a solicitor that a vast tract of New Zealand land was legally owned by a long-deceased world leader. How did this situation come about?

Leader: Male? (I assume they were human... and unless it was King Tut or the like, they were probably an adult.) From New Zealand? Britain?
Did the leader own the land before they died?
Were they given the land in someone's will? Was it meant to go to someone who happened to have the same name as this leader? Did it go to some organization that, for its own reasons, is said to be headed by this deceased leader?

Was the leader alive in ancient times? Before the Middle Ages? During the Middle Ages? Before the 1900s? During the 1900s?
Does the leader have a similar name to some aspect of NZ's government?

Just to be sure: the "situation" in the puzzle statement refers to how the vast tract of NZ came to be owned by said world leader? Or rather to how you were tipped-off of the fact?

"Vast tract" : a significant portion of the present territory of the country?

The world leader: chief of state of a European country? Of a country spanning multiple continents? WAG: Napoleon the first?

Is that part of the country under litigation? Could it be? Is it (or parts of it) relevantly named after the deceased world leader?

Was the solicitor acting for you ? Did he discover this through conveyancing? Are you buying or selling property or land?

"Vast tract" : a significant portion of the present territory of the country? It's a small percentage, but a fairly large swathe in actual terms. Think a couple dozen hectares.

The world leader: chief of state of a European country? yes (small ish) Of a country no spanning multiple continents? but yes WAG: Napoleon the first? no, this answer comes up a little short

Is that part of the country under litigation? no Could it be? yes Is it (or parts of it) relevantly named after the deceased world leader? no

Peter

Was the solicitor acting for you ? no Did he discover this through conveyancing? yes Are you buying or selling property or land? no (come on, I'm a millennial :P)

Relevant who owned the land before the word leader? A private person? The state of New Zealand? Another state? Another world leader? Nobody?

Was the land inherited? conquered? sold? presented?

Something like someone stating in his will "The Farmland will go to Philip the Handsome", when Philip the Handsome was meant to be the handsome grandson Philip?

Relevant who owned the land before the word leader? no A private person? The state of New Zealand? Another state? Another world leader? Nobody?

Was the land inherited? conquered? sold? this - although not hugely relevant presented?

Something like someone stating in his will "The Farmland will go to Philip the Handsome", when Philip the Handsome was meant to be the handsome grandson Philip? No but ORT - consider the next answer

Peter

Is it a Pope? Est!

Is the name of that particular land (city, town, etc.) relevant?

Was the pope alive when he acquired the land? Was he aware of the acquisition?
Is a written sales contract relevant? Is the word "pope" in the contract? The name and ordinal number of the pope in question?

So the sales contract is not relevant, but is another document? A deed of ownership (powered by LEO; do you say so in English?)? Is a wrongly filled out form relevant?
The number of the Pope is relevant - is it written down somewhere? As a Roman numeral? Was it meant to be a number? Or a letter?

Peter

Does the pope share a name and number with a different world ruler? no

LemonCurry

So the sales contract is not relevant, but is another document? yes A deed of ownership (powered by LEO; do you say so in English?)? Yope (New Zealand uses the Torrens, rather than the Deeds, system of title, but the document does relate to ownership and title) Is a wrongly filled out form ish relevant? Yes!
The number of the Pope is relevant - is it written down somewhere? yes As a Roman numeral? yes Was it meant to be a number? no Or a letter(s)? Yes

Rcb

Is the personal name of the pope relevant? No (it was Clement, for the purposes of this puzzle)

Nearly there now.

Was something filled in the wrong place of the ish-form? Was something abbreviated when it was supposed to be written out? A part of the owner's name? Like "Clement, Victor" shortened to "Clement VI."?

***** SPOILER *****

Due to some overzealous capitalisation on behalf of a typist, the New Zealand property register had a tract of land in the ownership of Clement XI, whereas it really belonged to a Chinese investor named Clement Xi.

A fictional example, but this is the sort of thing that can sit in the register for decades until somebody notices. Our titles are indefeasable, but there are checks and balances at hand to ensure that Mr. Xi enjoys his afforded rights in full.

Well done, LemonCurry, and thank you everyone else for playing.
